Richard Brandt: January 2009

http://richardbrandt.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Monday, January 19, 2009. And so it continues here. Greetings to the world again. This is an experiment in communication. .to take one of the oldest human arts and present it in digitized form expands beyond knowing what is possible in time. My mind, too, expands taking my body with it to the brink of balance/imbalance like the clay swirling 'round the center of the wheel pushed away into a new shape then returning again. Communication, commerce, shared knowledge, love of Earth. Now for some fun!

Richard Brandt: Balancing Beach

http://richardbrandt.blogspot.com/2010/01/balancing-beach.html

Tuesday, January 5, 2010. I haven't posted anything in a long time. Don't really know why I'm now.maybe just saw that old picture and wanted to fill in the rest of that beautiful day for you. It wasn't really all that long ago. 2 years maybe? A sunny winter's day with my friend Drew on the other side of the tunnel at Oceanside Beach. Oregon. I was just having some fun. This is my favorite kind of art. Spontaneous dance with the materials at hand. These images were taken by Drew. January 7, 2010 at 9:23 AM.

Monday, February 16, 2009. Some of you may know that I've been musing over designing a sustainable pottery village where knowledge of old life styles can take advantage of the newest in sustainable technologies. I'm researching the many ways to take advantage of firing of an anagama. Kiln Not only the amazing ceramics that come from this wood firing but ways of using the residual heat, the ash,and most resently. Some are just great to have around the house because they regulate humidity, deoderize. Progr...

VolvoxAureus - Amy's pottery: October 2009

Thursday, October 22, 2009. The importance of art. I started this post a month or more ago and never posted it. Here it is! To really explain how I feel about art, I think I should start by explaining what art is to me. I know it's different to everyone, so I don't want to claim that this is the. Definition of art, just that it's my. So Why is art important to me? Because I think that feelings. By Lois Lowry and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Tuesday, September 22, 2009. This weekend is the opening of St. Johns Art, a community art exhibition with the theme “inspired by St. Johns.” In honor of the event, I thought I’d write a post about pottery and community. This post is a long time coming—in my very first post I promised you I’d revisit the idea of community in a future post. The piece (I view it as one piece made up of many parts—like a Volvox. All participants recognize the importance of working together to add the final layer to our arti...

Wednesday, March 10, 2010. What makes a great kiln? A friend asked me the other day, "What makes a kiln great? I gave him a long-winded analysis of differences between kilns, based on my experience and my reading. I've only fired three wood kilns (two anagamas. And a small wood-kiln), so I hope that other more experienced woodfirers. Will chime in with comments. Type of door is a biggy. http://log.volvoxaureus.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, April 6, 2011. Fall and Winter 2011. Yes, I’m a terrible blogger. Haven’t posed anything in a year. I’ve actually had some posts in mind, and even half-written, just haven’t managed to get them finished and posted. But it’s spring now! You wouldn’t know it from the weather (cold and rainy, just like winter), but the trees and flowers are blooming and we have the occasional warm day. In February I fired with Ken Pincus. Tuesday, March 17, 2009. On my website, I talk a little about Volvox aureus. And why I named the site after these colonial microorganisms, but this morning in the shower (where I do all my best thinking), I was giving it more thought. Decided I’d dissect the idea a little deeper. Comes from the Latin volvere. Pottery is a communal activity beyond the classroom. We all produce our own work, but we depend on other potters for a lot. Think this is something I'd like to explore in a separate post. Consequenc...

Thursday, May 21, 2009. What do you think? I'm really interested to hear what other artists (and non-artists too) think about this:. The following has happened a couple of times in the last few months. I've taken pictures while hanging out with other people. Because I know that I'm really slow about posting pictures (they sometimes sit on my camera for months and months), I've just given people the photos directly- transferred them from my camera to their computers. So maybe I just need to be more clear ...

VolvoxAureus - Amy's pottery: June 2009

http://log.volvoxaureus.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, June 21, 2009. We unloaded the Nanagama. Today The firing went really well, and we all had high hopes, but were somewhat unsure how successful our reduction cooling was. Turns out it was absolutely perfect! Every piece that came out of the kiln today was stunning! We got amazing color. Most of us used groggy, iron-rich clay bodies so our pieces came out really rich, with great flashing. Business district and I'll be in the studio from 6-9pm. Maybe if you're lucky there will be beer.
