Durham City planning eggheads have it cracked | Richard Ord's Blog

I can’t help questioning plans in Durham City to make its public transport system more efficient. In the Sunderland Echo this week a raft of improvements to the road system as part of 5million project called Transit 15 were revealed. The killer line of this story appears at the end. Wow, a whole 100 seconds. That’s getting onto two minutes! Subscribe to comments with RSS.

Skip to search - Accesskey = s. Richard Ord’s Blog. Monster mums hit the bottle big style. By richardord on April 6, 2010. You should see the state of the nappies. Turns out the story about Sunderland Royal Hospital buying reinforced maternity beds for morbidly obese mums-to-be is not an April fool’s joke after all. Instead of eating for two, it appears there are a number of Sunderland mothers eating for eight, or nine, or maybe ten. Tagged with: fat mums. God works his ticket in mysterious ways. You are...

Skip to search - Accesskey = s. Richard Ord’s Blog. God works his ticket in mysterious ways. By richardord on April 8, 2010. God: Thou shalt eat your greens. Our Isaac’s defiance of authority continues unabated. He simply refuses to do anything unless it benefits him in some instantly gratifying way. In short, unless the request is chocolate-shaped it will be refused. After I asked him to finish his dinner, he instantly hit back with: No, you’re not the one in charge. No you’re not, he replied. God is.

Skip to search - Accesskey = s. Richard Ord’s Blog. Hey kids, looks like your dad’s been snorting Prozac. By richardord on April 6, 2010. Anything interesting happen at work today dad? In a bid to give our children a positive outlook on working life, at the tea-table every day I am obliged to regale our two boys with tales of my day at work. Given our boys are aged nine and six, it means I have to put the stories that appear in the paper though an internal horror filter. Fortunately, there’s plenty...
It all kicks off at kids footy game | Richard Ord's Blog

Skip to search - Accesskey = s. Richard Ord’s Blog. It all kicks off at kids footy game. By richardord on April 9, 2010. Our nine-year-old’s school skipping team came first in a competition the other day. No hoo-hah, everyone behaved politely. End of story. It was pretty much the same for the Easter bonnet parade our six-year-old took part in. No hoo-hahs (plenty of oohs and aahs), but again no bother. I wasn’t sure which was the more entertaining the slanging match on the sidelines or the match itself.

Adventures in digital journalism. Daring to be digital at a local newspaper. Crowd-sourcing for dummies – how the web actually helped me. May 24, 2010 in Digital thinking. I’m always nagging students, colleagues and random people in bars about the fact the web is not just a publishing platform, it’s a tool that can make you a better journalist irrespective of how your content reaches an audience. It’s a hard sell when you’re giving examples involving the BBC or a Guardian tech reporter. Newsdesk also tel...
A new adventure | Adventures in digital journalism
https://leehall.wordpress.com/2010/09/12/a-new-adventure
Adventures in digital journalism. Daring to be digital at a local newspaper. September 12, 2010 in Waffle. I’ve left the digital coalface, I suppose. I am no longer the digital editor of the Sunderland Echo. And I’ve just taken up a post as a senior lecturer in the well-regarded Journalism and PR department at the University of Sunderland. Term hasn’t started, but I feel like a kid in a sweet shop. My colleagues are a formidably qualified bunch too. October 16, 2010 at 8:16 pm. Good article, I like it.

Adventures in digital journalism. Daring to be digital at a local newspaper. Live streaming video from the field. Well, the sea…. August 9, 2010 in Digital thinking. I’m helping out the Hartlepool Mail team with their coverage of the Tall Ships Races 2010. It’s been a great excuse to play with live video streaming. It’s the kind of job I love as it lets me fiddle with technology, exploit a platform which minimises effort for instant returns and I’ve been given the freedom to work autonomously. 8211; Be q...
Helping people – why do I bother? | Adventures in digital journalism

Adventures in digital journalism. Daring to be digital at a local newspaper. Helping people – why do I bother? May 25, 2010 in Waffle. I’m usually pretty good at helping people. I go out of my way to, say, direct readers to a relevant contact or to get a hold of past issues of the Sunderland Echo. It’s nice to be nice, and one more reader on our side in an era of dwindling print sales and an uncertain digital future doesn’t go amiss. 2 My polite response:. Dear Mrs Xxxxxx,. All the best,. You are comment...

Richard oram / graphic design. Creativity on the Coast. Personally, I would consider myself to have excellent interpersonal and presentation skills, and can think conceptually as well as rationally. When it comes to clients I look for an enthusiasm and a ‘spark’ that matches my own. I’ve worked for big businesses, small businesses, corporate brands, charities and more but as far as I’m concerned if you love your job as much as I do, then I’ll be happy to work with you! Richard Orchard | Various thoughts on the world
Various thoughts on the world. Over engineering is an easy trap to fall into. Typically, it occurs when additional complexity and functions are added to an application that are not needed. They are added with a view of a particular feature being needed in the future, sometime…. Or, just when people are clever, and want to demonstrate how clever they are. Deciding future features is best left to the future…. Otherwise you can build features that will never be used. For example, if a client has a requireme...
