The sculptures below were created and exhibited in El Paso, Texas from 1971-76. This piece was exhibited at the UTEP Union Gallery in 1973 in a show called "Coming Attractions". The piece is made of telephone poles and sisal rope. Thirty feet in length it is entitled "Space Drawing #1.". Works by Dennis Evans, Jim LaSalandra and Mark Negrete were also in the exhibition. Vaka

The canoes landed on the beach at Anse Vata. Te Au O Tonga is seen in the background. Thousands watch the landing. Modern fiberglass canoes were used by youth participants. Upon landing they posed for pictures, danced and sang. Each of the canoes was decorated with plants and flowers. Te Au O Tonga, the Cook Island Vaka. Moana helps tie the Vaka down. Not to miss out, Steffan assists as well. Note the stone anchor on the deck. Tito, the pilot. Libby applies sunblock on Steffan's back.

The gentleman pictured below is in his 40's and told me he began his Moko when he was 14. It is not complete, as eventually his ears and upper lip will also be tattooed. I met the young woman pictured below, Raewyne Te-Arao Gray, at a dance club in Anse Vata early in the trip. She is Maori and was a member of the same dance group as Kepa, Te Mataarae I Orehu. The bravery and pride that she displayed as she danced with the group were carried over to the tattoo table.

The First Day

The second day in Noumea started with a 3 1/2 mile walk through town to pick up supplies and get a lay of the land. The panoramic views were breathtaking and the people I met on the street wonderful. The food, supplies, and bottles of wine proved more than one could carry, so I found a box and a bus stop and worked my way back to the hotel. Still tired from the initial trip I took advantage of New Caledonia's siesta tradition, only to be awakened by Steffan announcing, "there's a party, Mate!
