Rick Learns to Sail. June 21, 2012. Mackinac Island and The Final Test. 8212; rickvancfu @ 2:10 am. We left compact town of Hessel bound for the island. Kim R. says this about Hessel, It is old school . That is definitely the case. The Hessel Grocery and food counter with home cooked, stick to your ribs food was our favorite spot. The Island Bar was also a great haven from the two inches of rain. Teacher Dave remembers the strawberry rhubarb pie, yum. We came in after that and R&R for the rest of the day...

We immediately opened a bottle of wine and sat up on their roof deck and looked out on the bay Pozzuoli, immediately down from Trish and Peter’s amazing home. We needed Fitbit steps so took a walk around his local neighborhood lake, Lake Averno, poet Virgil’s opening to the underworld and the site of the ruins of Agrippa’s canal, public baths, and tunnel to Cuma, about a 3 mile walk. Thursday was sunny and cool. We drove to Cuma and toured the ruins there. They sit on a high bluff above farms and beach in the distance.
