Konon para pengrajin pandai besi koto padang sudah melakukan kegiatan ini sejak lama, saat penjajahan belanda pengrajin pandai besi koto padang sudah membuat senjata tradisional berupa pedang yang dinamakan Pedang Selangkeh , yang merupakan senjata Tradisional masyarakat Kerinci, Selangkeh tak hanya dianggap sebagai alat pertahanan diri saja, namun ada juga yang di jadikan Sko atau benda pusaka oleh beberapa masyarakat Kerinci.
