Sciences Fund Criteria

http://www.robertmartinayers.org/fund-grants/criteria.html

Robert Martin Ayers Sciences Fund Project Criteria. The fund is interested in three sorts of projects: Activities directly related to astronomy and education, support for "smaller telescopes", and projects that involve interesting, perhaps novel, telescopes, detectors, etc. You can find a full list of the Fund's grants at the grants page. Elsewhere at this site I discuss the role of smaller telescopes. As opportunities arise, I support the use of existing "smaller telescopes". I looked at Lucky Astronomy.

The Boller and Chivens Forty Inch

http://www.robertmartinayers.org/lowell/boller-and-chivens.html

The Boller and Chivens Forty Inch Telescope. This telescope was originally located at Northwestern University at the Lindheimer Astronomical Research Center. Lindheimer was created in 1967 with Boller and Chivens 16" and 40" telescopes, the latter "financed primarily by a gift from the A. Montgomery Ward Foundation". End of Original Use. Alas the links to the Northwestern University newspaper no longer work. The 40 inch telescope remained in storage at Lowell for ten years. You can read about the telesco...

Choosing a Telescope

http://www.robertmartinayers.org/choosing-a-telescope.html

You can google "buying a telescope" and get some basic advice from, e.g., Orion Telescopes or Sky and Telescope magazine. But what I'm going to give you here is advice that is even more basic. I'm going to try to get you to understand what your initial goals and ambitions are. There is a saying that I have heard attributed to the Japanese: "The Three Whys". To understand someone, you have to ask "Why? Alas th...

Willow Springs 3000 Observing Site

http://www.robertmartinayers.org/willow-springs

Willow Springs 3000 Observing Site. I own a dark-sky (well, darker sky) California observing site in the hills northeast of Pinnacles National Monument, southeast of Hollister. It is forty fenced acres of grassland at the 3000 foot level (tops) of the Diablo Range, three miles west of Panoche Pass. This is the site called "Willow Springs 3000" at the TAC list of observing sites. My site is dark for a location within two hours of San Jose. The ClearDarkSky map. The last 2 1/2 miles of road is uphill dirt&...
