Using Op Amps to Interface to Spring-type Reverb Units. Revised November, 2001. In a spring reverb, a solenoid (coil of wire) is used to generate a magnetic field that imparts vibrations to the unit's springs. As Ampere's Law shows, the strength of the field is proportional to the current through the coil, not the voltage across it. Yet, many reverb drive circuits produce a voltage rather than a current output. Why is this a problem? S = the complex frequency variable, j2 p. L = the coil's inductance.

At what current level should I drive the reverb s input coil? That s an important question. Too little current and the output will be noisy, too much current and the core will saturate producing a muddy sound. A maximum current of 30 amp-turns is just about right (see Tech Note. The Ultimate Spring Reverb Recovery Amp. In my tech note tech note. I describe a simple and very good reverb recovery amp using a monolithic op amp and only a few components. However, it does not offer the ultimate in low-noise performance. Output impedance @ 1 kHz. 1 = short (1.2 to 2 sec). 2 = medium (1.75 to 3.0 sec). 3 = long (2.75 to 4 sec). A = input grounded, output grounded. B = input grounded, output insulated. One-Knob Wide-Range Tone Control. Spice can be a bit frustrating to learn, but is well worth the effort for those who enjoy playing with circuit design. As always, the selection of op amp will affect the sound quality and noise the circuit produces. A good choice would be Burr-Brown's OPA134, 2134 series. Other good choices would be Analog Devices' AD823 or Burr-Brown's OPA604, 2604 series.
