Linda's Derbyshire Diary

Sunday, March 25, 2012. The former Osmaston Hall. 65279; Apparently it was as hot in Derbyshire today as it was in Madrid. Wow! Certainly a very warm and beautifully sunny day. We went for a walk at a place I had never explored before - Osmaston estate near Ashbourne. There used to be a huge Italianate house here in Victorian times, but it was demolished in the 1960s. Another pretty cottage in the village. Here I am trying to take a photo of it with my tablet PC. 65279;. 65279;. Across from the tree...

Linda's Derbyshire Diary: Round Press on a Sunny Day

http://rufford1.blogspot.com/2012/03/round-press-on-sunny-day.html

Sunday, March 18, 2012. Round Press on a Sunny Day. Press" is a funny name for a village. It's a straggle of cottages located in a rather backwater area of North East Derbyshire between the former industrial towns of Wingerworth and Clay Cross and the countryside heading over towards Wooley Moor and Ogston Reservoir. There is a series of three small reservoirs at Press, created for heaven knows what purpose but these days a haunt for fishermen. 65279;. Outside Mr Sleigh's Manor House. Heading back t...

Linda's Derbyshire Diary: February 2012

http://rufford1.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

Tuesday, February 28, 2012. February In Monsall Dale. This weekend we went for a short walk in Monsall Dale, starting from White Lodge and walking up to Monsall Head. Along the way there is an impressive waterfall, where a rescue team was practising, with the aid of a huge Newfoundland rescue dog called Tugs. Lesley was wearing a new Fairisle hat that she recently knitted. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Steaming in on High. Rotating stones and rabbits and stuff.

Linda's Derbyshire Diary: May 2011

http://rufford1.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 29, 2011. Well Dressing Weekend - Part Two. Our well dressing weekend continued with a trip to the charming higgledy piggledy town of Wirksworth, where the annual Bank holiday carnival featured nine well dressings by various community groups. St Mary's Church was prettily decorated with flowers and a band of volunteers served tea and cakes to visitors eager to get out of the wind for a bit. Well Dressing Weekend - Part One. Although there are a couple of real wells in Brackenfield, they are a...

Linda's Derbyshire Diary: Return to Cressbrook Hall

http://rufford1.blogspot.com/2011/06/return-to-cressbrook-hall.html

Monday, June 27, 2011. Return to Cressbrook Hall. There were two wells dressed. Neither were real wells, but the symbolic type much favoured by villages that have lost their original water sources, or the real ones are too muddy and too off the beaten track for cake seeking car bourne tourists like us to tramp all the way to. I liked the idea they had of rigging up a tiny temporary garden fountain in front of each. Distinctly muddy by this time, it having evidently rained hard the night before. A notice ...

Linda's Derbyshire Diary: October 2011

http://rufford1.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Saturday, October 22, 2011. We went on a trip to the Devil's Arse last Sunday. Or Peak Cavern, as it used to be called. The cavern extrance is dramatic - the largest in the British Isles. After leaving the cavern we had a walk up Cavedale - the limestone gorge above which towers the ruined Norman castle. It is like a scene from "Gawain and the Green Knight.". This blog is……. Have fairy cakes, will travel. Asymp; Leave a comment. Recently, but before my trip to London, I had the pleasure in attending a lecture on food and drink in the Georgian period. This mainly featured tea, coffee and hot chocolate and the history and social status surrounding these products and the culture in indulging. The feature at the end of the lecture mostly consisted of free samples! Vanilla Hot Chocolate Recipe. 1 pint 600 ml full fat milk. 4 oz 100g Dark Chocolate (I use 50% cocoa).

My yearly annual trek to Wimbledon for the tennis tournament was on a beautiful warm day, but thankfully not the overwhelming heat of the previous day. For me, I just like to see Tennis in the summer, not everyone’s cup of tea I know, but each to their own. And that was it for another year for me. The day over all too soon. Plenty more to watch on the TV, but it’s not the same as being there. Advantage Wim...Please lo...

This blog is……. Have fairy cakes, will travel. Tripping the heights fantastic. Asymp; Leave a comment. I haven’t been on the Cable cars at Matlock Bath for quite a few years. So it was time to do that trip again on what turned out to be a lovely early May day. A train to Matlock Bath was the easiest way for me to travel to Derbyshire and also enabled me a 20% discount on the cable cars to the Heights of Abraham. Watching the world go by and dreaming of a mini fish and chips by the river. Next post →.

I’m only really a fan of modern ballet and so the opportunity to see the touring Matthew Bourne production of “Edward Scissorhands” was a night out that I couldn’t miss. Gorgeous sets and costumes, fantastic dancing and plenty of humour created an exciting theatre experience of the bitter sweet story. Mystery and intrigue in the Library. Asymp; 2 Comments. This blog is……. Have fairy cakes, will travel. Mystery and intrigue in the Library. Asymp; 2 Comments. Recently I had the opportunity to visit the Terror and Wonder : The Gothic Imagination exhibition at the British Library in London. If you like looking at old books and classic film posters and clips (and I do) then this exhibition is a fascinating joy. The British Library has dusted all the classic volumes it can down for the exhibition and relied on the BFI and other notable museums to lend out the cu...

This blog is……. Have fairy cakes, will travel. An older part of Matlock. Asymp; 2 Comments. Starting in Old Matlock Town with my guide, Linda, the walk started through the church yard of St Giles up to the War Memorial on Pic Tor. A fine spot for a good overall view of Matlock. We waved to Fidel on Matlock Bank and walked down towards the crossing over the River Derwent. Then it was a walk along the roadside towards Matlock Bath passing a few walkers, a few hardy canoeists and a rock climber or two.

Let them eat bread « Eyes and Outcry

https://toohie.wordpress.com/2015/04/02/let-them-eat-bread

Let them eat bread. There’s nothing quite like the smell of freshly baked bread to make the house feel like home! The problem with baking one’s own bread is the time it takes – all that kneading and proving and rising and knocking back and kneading and rising ad infinitum. Takes bloody hours! You have to plan bread-making like a military campaign, and it’s only feasible on days off work. That’s unless you bake Italian Rustic Bread! I use this really easy recipe from the “From the Feast” blog. Just anothe...
