British Lions Rugby Tour to South Africa 2009. Sunday, 26 April 2009. British Lions 2009 Squad Announcement. The touring squad for the 2009 British Lions rugby. Not surprisingly, the squad is dominated by players from Ireland and Wales, the two standout teams in this year's Six Nations. It is also clear that the selectors have tried to pick existing combinations, which would seem prudent given the limited amount of preparation time before the tour kicks off in just over a month. David Wallace (Ireland), ...

British Lions Rugby Tour to South Africa 2009: July 2009

British Lions Rugby Tour to South Africa 2009. Thursday, 9 July 2009. John Smit's "Call of 99". In the third test of the 2009 British Lions. In doing so South African rugby has, perhaps unwittingly, issued its own Call of 99. Willie John McBride's men operated under the (correct) assumption that the referee of that match would be unlikely to issue red cards if the whole team was involved. As an interesting aside, the South Africa-Canada match in the 1995 World Cup - also in Port Elizabeth - was playe...

Tri Nations Rugby: August 2009

Wednesday, 26 August 2009. IRB Threatens Springbok World Cup Ban. The IRB has at long last published the findings of the independent review of the Bakkies Botha "Justice 4" incident which took place in the third British Lions test. Quite frankly I find it ridiculous that the IRB could even make such a statement. I very much doubt that they would be able to follow through on the threat even if they wanted to, but in my opinion it is the IRB which has really brought rugby into disrepute. I truly hope this ...
