How It All Began. The Salvo Volunteer Fire Department bought its first truck for $25. A man from Virginia contacted the men of the department, and Dick, Ray, and Leslie went to Virginia beach to get the truck. Over the years, other trucks were purchased for the department. The station was modified. An addition was built onto the building to add a third bay. A kitchen and office area was partitioned off from the rest of the station in another modification. JOIN US EACH MONDAY AT 6:30 PM FOR WEEKLY TRAINING. Being a tourist area, our population swells in the summertime, causing a high population density in an area with a very low year-round population. Our volunteers have to be extra alert during the summer months because of the increased risks. We meet for training every Monday night, year-round, at 6:30 at the fire station. Welcome. We are Station 48, the Salvo Volunteer Fire Department, located in the village of Salvo on Hatteras Island, North Carolina. We are a 100% volunteer organization and along with the Chicamacomico Banks Volunteer Fire Department. We serve the northern part of Hatteras Island from the Bonner Bridge to approximately halfway between the villages of Salvo and Avon.
