What was I doing? CENP-A Ser7 is phosphorylated during mitosis (JCS 2001). Double-strand DNA breaks rapidly recruit CENP-A in human and mouse cells (PNAS, 2009). Human UNG2 is both necessary and sufficient for CENP-A assembly. PLoS ONE, 2011). Xenopus CENP-A assembly requires uracil generation and UNG2. DNA Repair, 2005).

What doesn’t kill you, you might have done to yourself. Not all DNA damage is bad. Yes, gamma-rays and ultraviolet light can kill you, but they can also be therapeutic when applied to the right places at the right doses. Some chemotherapeutics kill cancer cells by inducing DNA damage, which is bad for the cancer, but good for you! Even DNA damage can make you stronger.
