A place where I can write things I don't get paid for. April 18, 2015. Manitoba Coaching Legend To Be Honoured. Al Hares. Photo courtesy of Hometown Hockey. Al Hares remembers a time when he coached the fathers of the sons he’s coached. You see a lot over career behind the bench that has spanned over 50 years and Hares’ contributions to the game of hockey in Manitoba are being honoured this fall. Hares, now 70, hasn’t completely quit coaching, although his doctors have advised him against doing it full-t...

Morden becoming a beacon of immigration | Scott's Scribbles

A place where I can write things I don't get paid for. March 29, 2015. Morden becoming a beacon of immigration. The most important thing about the success of Morden’s immigration program for Valentine Vinichenko is how they personalize it. Vinichenko, along with his wife and two kids, arrived last week in Canada to start their new life in southwestern Manitoba. The services they provided were very useful to us as a family, they made it very comfortable for us to make the move, Vinichenko said. The policy...

A place where I can write things I don't get paid for. October 30, 2014. Photo courtesy of The Viewspaper. Man, we’ve fucked up. Women deserve better. I don’t pretend to know all the facts about Jian Ghomeshi or the self-inflicted mess he finds himself in. What I do know is that close to a dozen women (perhaps more) were too afraid to show their faces and stand up for who they are and what happened to them. I do know these women, and the countless others who remain anonymous and in hiding, deserve better.

A place where I can write things I don't get paid for. December 12, 2014. Story of the Semester. A bunch of beauties. PHOTO/JAMES TURNER. I could have cried today. Not because I was depressed, or the cat I don’t own died or Liverpool got knocked out of the Champions League (maybe a single tear there). I could have cried today because it is the last day I will be in school with all the lovely people from Section 1 of Red River College’s Creative Communications program. Sounds a little dramatic, eh? Street...

George’s, King of the Fatboy | Scott's Scribbles

A place where I can write things I don't get paid for. April 10, 2015. George’s, King of the Fatboy. Editor’s note: We had a review assignment in our journalism class this past week. I chose Original George’s Burgers and Subs. These are my findings. It comes across as a simple, blue-collar restaurant, and the menu confirms it. Diners often elicit a certain set of thoughts when it comes to their food – it’s greasy, hearty and plentiful. Original George’s Burgers and Subs follow these to a tee. The menu is...

A place where I can write things I don't get paid for. April 23, 2015. Advice from a first year for a first year. Let’s be real for a moment, shall we? There were a couple of assignments we did this year that you could say were geared toward expressing to incoming first year students what life is like in the Creative Communications program at Red River College. While these assignments had to be professional, the reality of it is this: CreComm is going to kick your ass. 8211; Get to know people. Don’t...

Mental Illness is a Thing, Let’s Talk | Scott's Scribbles

A place where I can write things I don't get paid for. January 28, 2015. Mental Illness is a Thing, Let’s Talk. Photo courtesy of Lakeview Church in Regina. I was Rick Rypien. I was Wade Belak. I was Derek Boogaard. I am a man who lives in the clutches of a sickness. Let’s talk. Before I started dabbling in sports journalism, I fell ill. It wasn’t a cold or the flu. It was, however, a chronic illness, although I didn’t know it from the beginning. You have your down moments, but you pass them off as somet...
