Creating a table of contents
http://onemanpublisher.paulbrookes.net/blog/2007/10/05/creating-a-table-of-contents
Creating a table of contents. On October 5th, 2007. Time for some humble pie here — I always thought this wasn’t a feature of QuarkXPress, but I’ve recently I discovered it is. Here’s how. Manually creating tables of contents (TOCs) for a large book is a real pain — I know, I’ve. Been doing for some time. Well, I’d been creating TOCs in MS Word and updating the numbers manually. To create the TOC, go to Edit Lists. This dialog box will appear. Importing your table of contents. This function is also usefu...

Improved Word to Quark conversion?
http://onemanpublisher.paulbrookes.net/blog/2008/01/07/improved-word-to-quark-conversion
Improved Word to Quark conversion? On January 7th, 2008. From the good folk at Planet Quark. On a product to improve the (frankly fairly basic) importing of MS Word text into Quark. Interestingly, the utility allows you to import Word footnotes (presumably onto the relevant page rather than the end of the text string), which judging by feedback would be a valuable tool for many people. The product is called qXport and the link to the English version of the site is here. Email (not published) (required).

I’m back … but need your help

I’m back but need your help. On September 14th, 2009. Right, I’ve finally got this site back online. It was offline for several months; a combination of a new job and a domain squatter who’s sitting on the old URL. Not exactly the greatest comeback since Lazarus (left), but I think people were finding the information useful. Therefore, I’m rehosting the site on another space, to keep the articles online. Print-quality PDFs from QuarkXPress. On April 11th, 2008. In a slight departure of style and a slight outbreak of geekiness here’s a video outlining my methods for making print-quality PDFs from QuarkXPress, via a PostScript file. I’m not the world’s best commentator, so you’ll have to forgive me. If you’re interested, the video was created using a very handy bit of software called CamStudio (from camstudio.org. And uploaded onto Veoh.com. Online Videos by Veoh.com. Email (not published) (required).

Can I export Quark to Word?
http://onemanpublisher.paulbrookes.net/blog/2008/04/02/can-i-export-quark-to-word
Can I export Quark to Word? On April 2nd, 2008. The surprising answer to this question is ‘yes’ — but only up to a point. If you place the cursor inside a text box and go to File Save Text, QuarkXPress will let you save the entire story — the contents of the text box and all those linked to it. If you select some text additional options will appear; either to save the selected text or the entire story. What to look out for in your Word export. Certain Quark-specific functions, for example thin spaces and...

Quark and Excel — importing tables
http://onemanpublisher.paulbrookes.net/ms-excel/quark-and-excel-importing-tables-2
Quark and Excel — importing tables. On October 11th, 2007. Another feature the people at Quark slipped in, without me noticing, is the ability to import Excel tables. I’ve noticed several queries in my stats bit of WordPress enquiring about importing Excel tables, so I thought I’d better write a few words. I think this feature appeared in Quark 7, but it wasn’t immediately obvious. It’s quite easy to do (though less easy to find). Although the numbers import reliably in my experience, you’ll still have t...
