Self Sustained Living: December 2014

http://www.selfsustainedliving.net/2014_12_01_archive.html

On a small farm, feeding myself off the land and trying to do what I can the old fashioned way with a modern twist. Sunday, December 21, 2014. Another Year Done and Gone. It's not all depressing tho. I'm still here. Other than the electric bill, which is always behind, at least I'm floating about even from month to month. The pitiful job has kept just enough fuel in the tank to keep getting to work and cover the mortgage. Now if I could just get the darn coffee plants to stay alive! So, here I am, once a...

Self Sustained Living: February 2015

On a small farm, feeding myself off the land and trying to do what I can the old fashioned way with a modern twist. Saturday, February 28, 2015. And, Life Goes On. Whats left of the herd after my(mine and theirs) heart breaking loss of Lucky the herd leader and my best milker, Lil Sister. Tinkers twins are a sassy little pair, constantly running and playing. I got to watch the head butting championship this morning. Not sure who won, not too sure they know either, LOL. Not one single seed started here!

On a small farm, feeding myself off the land and trying to do what I can the old fashioned way with a modern twist. Saturday, June 14, 2014. Well, it's been a busy few weeks. Lots going on but it's all been wheel spin. 3 weeks of every day rains, the truck wire shorting and burning, the cows in the road, tractor alternator shooting craps and so on and so forth. Labels: cows in the road. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). My Favorite Seed Company! Keep the farm fund. Coffee with the Hermit. Kids and Canning Jars.

On a small farm, feeding myself off the land and trying to do what I can the old fashioned way with a modern twist. Sunday, March 15, 2015. It's pretty decent outside. It's been much warmer, a ton of rain, a little flooding and everything is a muddy mess. I finally got some seed started. Just a dozen cherry tomatoes. The big toms will get started tomorrow while I'm off work. I'll probably make 3 or 4 batches of soap with all the goats milk I have in the fridge. Eh, time to head for the off farm job!

Self Sustained Living: August 2014

http://www.selfsustainedliving.net/2014_08_01_archive.html

On a small farm, feeding myself off the land and trying to do what I can the old fashioned way with a modern twist. Saturday, August 30, 2014. Sweltering heat, heavy heart and reflections. Now, I feel like I have a hole next to my heart. I will never forget you Scifi, you were one of a kind. Wednesday, August 6, 2014. Where oh where has my little dog gone. Oh where oh where can he be? LOL Yep, I'm still alive! I know, shame on me for being gone for so long. So, where have I been? Lack of rain around here...

Tuesday, April 22, 2014. Chickens in the City. Image courtesy of morguefile.com. If a small backyard flock of hens providing fresh, healthy eggs, meat and pest control, plus the sheer fun of watching and hearing chickens do their thing makes you think happy, why not do it? Just because you live in town doesn't mean you wouldn't like to have a chicken or two around the place! You should be able to find out if your area allows chickens by going to their web site or contacting the city offices. Keeping chic...

Country Living in a City Home: July 2014

http://countrylivinginacityhome.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Wednesday, July 30, 2014. Hurry, get the harvest in! And the rush is on. August means bushels of ripe tomatoes, summer squash overrunning the garden, gallons of cucumbers and peppers, and corn tasseling overnight. That is, if you're one of those gardeners who never fails! That's not me and that's probably not you. One crop or another fails now and then and we have to say, "Well, the tomatoes did well, anyway! Which way will it be? It's time to make the decisions and full speed ahead! Where to put the she...

Friday, June 27, 2014. It's an easy thing to pick purslane and add a few leaves to a salad, but if you want to take advantage to this free health booster, eat more than a few leaves now and then! Friday, June 13, 2014. Image courtesy of ZooFari. Possibly the most desirable and common of all edible weeds, purslane grows abundantly where the soil has been disturbed, as in a garden, and where water is sufficient, also in a garden. Which means, for the backyard forager, that you probably will never run out.

Country Living in a City Home: Back Yard Foraging

http://countrylivinginacityhome.blogspot.com/2014/06/back-yard-foraging.html

Friday, June 13, 2014. If you don't poison weeds in your back yard, you probably have a good source of food just for the taking. You don't have to plant it or water it or weed it or feed it because "weeds" grow in a habitat that suits them without interference from us. Of course, a little care without overdoing it will help produce more food. For instance, dandelions make dandelion "coffee". Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Subscribe Now: Feed Icon. Rambling Anne: Strawberries, garlics, and walking onions

http://ramblinganne.blogspot.com/2012/11/strawberries-garlics-and-walking-onions.html

Saturday, November 10, 2012. Strawberries, garlics, and walking onions. Couldn't ask for better weather! We're about to take off to put in a strawberry patch in at one of the other gardens we work. The area has already been prepped. Lots of compost turned in to fluff up the soil and add nutrients, stones that have surfaced have been removed. all set and ready to go! Isn't that always the case every year? What I am also excited about (and it's making me wish spring was already here! Got my garlic in too, ...
