London Super Comics Convention 2015. March 16, 2015. A few bits and pieces from across this weekend, which saw London Super Comics Convention take place for, I think, the third time. I went to the very first one, back when they were marketing themselves as having one giant guest at each year’s event, with Stan Lee being their first such guest. They’d booked out the ExCEL Centre (did I get the capitals right on that? Mack, Sienkiewicz and Janson. It felt rather relaxed, with the big open space at all side...

Comics: Fix Your Solicitations! May 8, 2015. Each solicitation explains the issues published by a company in any given month. It shows the issue number, the cover, a synopsis of the issue (usually written by the person who writes the comic, it seems) and all the pre-order details. It’s a guide to which books tie in where, why a retailer should especially pre-order certain stories or concepts, and… well, fans immediately seized upon them. For this reason, solicitations are an important point of entry for ...

Saturday, January 5, 2008. The hot new entertainment trend for 1977 - "Anime"! J'ever notice the continual parade of new anime fans who have the idea that Japanese cartoons are some brand new thing that only recently impacted American pop culture? Because if THEY just found out about it, it HAS to be some hot new trend! Wrong As evidence to the contrary allow me to present. Cool Robot Toys of The 1970's, namely, Shogun Warriors. Plenty of ancillary merchandise like coloring books and puzzles produced a S...

Monday, January 26, 2015. A look at Gigantor's new adventures. The New Adventures of Gigantor! Sure, this 1980 remake of the popular 1963 boy-and-robot anime series (based on the Mitsuteru Yokoyama. Very 1980s giant robot remake that doesn’t rest on its legacy, but instead takes off running and never stops. Part of a wave of color reboots that included Astro Boy. Brought over the 1980 Tetsujin series and merging the past with the (1980) present was exactly what he did. These New Adventures Of Giganto...

Friday, March 12, 2010. MANGA KAMISHIBAI: THE ART OF JAPANESE PAPER THEATER. Eric P. Nash. Harry N. Abrams, 2009. I saw the figure BYIIIIN in gold. Even a kamishibai Batman couldn’t save the medium. Kintaro and animal chums fight the evil colonialists. Today a few remaining kamishibai ply their trade as a historical re-enactment of sorts, a cultural touchstone in a Japan that embraces the past as strongly as it dreams of the future. As the Showa Era becomes the idealized past of a generation, the pap...
