Examples: cleanse especially when compared to lens or lenses and cleans. Also, consider heaven or leaven (to raise) unlike leave or create. Or even Lead (the element) versus led or head (pronounced as you would "hed") versus heat (where a makes e long) Cleanse comes from Old English as does Clean. Leaven comes from Old French while Leave comes from Old English - ok, different origins, but after over 1000 years, shouldn't there be some rationalization?

Examples: c: acquire or nearly any *cqu* word. Worcestershire - pronounced "Woostershire" will pop up again. Gloucestershire, pronounced "Glosstershire". Words with *ck - neck, nack, buck all are sounded with a single "k" sound. There's also muscle, pronouced "mus-el" while sclerosis has 'skl' sound to start off. For those who pronounce (mostly British) "schedule" as 'shed-yule' it provides yet another instance.
