Wildlife of Loch Hourn and Knoydart

Sea birds such as oyster catchers, terns, waders, eider ducks and herons are seen frequently from the doorstep. Golden eagles can sometimes be spotted soaring high above Skiary, and are a treasure to behold. Mammals include pine martens, mountain goats, seals, porpoises and, occasionally, sea otters. An evening’s entertainment can be had watching the deer graze on the shore in front of the cottage from the green house. Seal colony across the loch.

How you spend your time at Skiary is entirely up to you. Skiary is a hidden nature paradise where you can relax and re-charge. It’s the perfect place to sit and read that classic novel you’ve always wanted to, finish that sewing project you started, hone your landscape photography skills or gather mussels off the shore. Though remote, Skiary is relatively easy to reach. We are 4 hours from Glasgow and Edinburgh, and about 2 hours from Inverness and Fort William. From the end of the road at Kinloch Hourn, Skiary is reached in 35 minutes (not including photo stops! On foot. We can usually pick up luggage in the boat from the jetty at the end of the road (as shown in the picture.). Our nearest international airport is at Inverness. Skiary is the last surviving building of an ancient highland crofting village. Tom's grandparents bought the land and cottage over 25 years ago and established its reputation as Britain's most remote guest house. Tom remembers his childhood holidays at Skiary fondly, and in 2009 he and his partner Claire embraced the challenge of taking over the family business. The house itself has no electricity, instead parrafin lamps are used for lighting and a Rayburn stove for hot water. We have a telephone.
