Friends of Smug Creek. The terraced gardens feature a collection a mature hosta that grow especially well in these conditions, a large selection of modern and historic daylilies, many irises, peonies, hydrangeas and a variety of unusual perennials. Structure is give to the garden design with conifers, Japanese maples and other ornamental trees. We have done our best to plant a succession of color and interest in this garden and think that it has something to offer from spring until early fall.

Friends of Smug Creek. The idea has not worked too well and the hostas are not growing to their full potential. The shade is too deep, the tree roots are crowding into the hosta roots and although the slope is a gentle one the rain and irrigation is draining off the hill before it can penetrate the soil beneficially. Finally the area is much flatter and this time we have planted in the dips and put the pathways on the higher ground. Watering should be much more efficient. The Small Hosta Garden.

Friends of Smug Creek. The only part of the Smug Creek property that had been 'gardened' when we moved here 9 years ago was the gently sloping open space to the south of the house. This was a grassy area, not quite wonderful enough to be described as a lawn, with one mature island bed off center containing a hydrangea, some daffodils and some purple bearded iris.
