Smug Creek Happenings

Monday, September 2, 2013. The gardening visiting season is almost over for another year. Opening the garden is a wonderful experience because no one ever says that “your garden is awful”, and it is so interesting to see the garden through the eyes of visitors. We give garden tourists a brief introduction to Smugcreek and then explain that here we have created four gardens. A few weeks ago one of our guests suggested that we actually have five. So, that is what it has become. The stock reply is this:.

Smug Creek Happenings: Come on spring.....

http://www.smugcreekgardens.blogspot.com/2011/04/come-on-spring.html

Monday, April 25, 2011. Spring is a long time coming to Smug Creek this year. Although we are closer to. And we get piles of winter snow, by late April our gardens are usually bursting to break their hibernation. This year however nature seems very sleepy. April is set to be the coldest for many years and at this rate it might also be the wettest. Snowdrops have come and gone but the daffodils and narcissus are very reluctant to nod their heads. This year only about six have dared to risk exposure. The p...

Smug Creek Happenings: Forget-Me-Not Time at Smug Creek

Sunday, May 15, 2011. Forget-Me-Not Time at Smug Creek. Forget-me-nots line the main path. The rain has stopped and the sun has begun to shine. When spring arrives she arrives quickly in these parts and the garden has suddenly burst into life and color. Epimediums are small but fabulous. And shine in the terraces. Smug Creek Happenings: February 2013

http://www.smugcreekgardens.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 24, 2013. Deer Fencing at Smug Creek. Deer seem to have ‘discovered’ our gardens last fall and this winter. It is very annoying and whilst they cannot do much damage at this time of year we do not want them to make a habit of visiting. When we first move here and contemplated gardens I suggested that the garden area should be ringed with deer defenses. Kathy pointed out that if we fenced the deer out we were fencing ourselves in. They simply walk around them. Branches fall on it and drag...

Friends of Smug Creek. The terraced gardens feature a collection a mature hosta that grow especially well in these conditions, a large selection of modern and historic daylilies, many irises, peonies, hydrangeas and a variety of unusual perennials. Structure is give to the garden design with conifers, Japanese maples and other ornamental trees. Smug Creek Gardens - The Hosta Glen

http://www.smugcreekgardens.com/thehostaglen.html

Friends of Smug Creek. The idea has not worked too well and the hostas are not growing to their full potential. The shade is too deep, the tree roots are crowding into the hosta roots and although the slope is a gentle one the rain and irrigation is draining off the hill before it can penetrate the soil beneficially. Finally the area is much flatter and this time we have planted in the dips and put the pathways on the higher ground. Watering should be much more efficient. The Small Hosta Garden.

Smug Creek Gardens - The New Gardens

http://www.smugcreekgardens.com/thenewgardens.html

Friends of Smug Creek. The only part of the Smug Creek property that had been 'gardened' when we moved here 9 years ago was the gently sloping open space to the south of the house. This was a grassy area, not quite wonderful enough to be described as a lawn, with one mature island bed off center containing a hydrangea, some daffodils and some purple bearded iris. We are very pleased with the result, although it will take time to mature. Two more island beds are planned to fill the available space and we ...
