In Tete, Mozambique! Thursday, August 6, 2009. Divide a circle in 11 equal parts. Today I left the kids at school for the penultimate time this term. I drove straight to the house of Q, my guard/worker on the Hill. He has been waiting on rocks. that got sorted out later. Today, I was in search of SHADE! I want it here. Make a circle from this center. Shift it if you have to and dig for the poles.". Do you want a door? No, just poles and a roof. Can we do it? Yes, maam. No problem.". When I got back to th...

MozamWeek: Not all talk, but not all that great at doin' what needs to be done
http://mozamweek.blogspot.com/2014/11/not-all-talk-but-not-all-that-great-at.html
In Tete, Mozambique! Saturday, November 29, 2014. Not all talk, but not all that great at doin' what needs to be done. I have been a frustrated literacy specialist for about 15 years. I'll just admit it. I haven't ever taught anyone to read. I never have claimed to teach, but to train trainers and develop materials and to research how two very different languages can be used in education of some very special people in a very difficult situation. It might not work. It might not change the world. God is go...

http://mozamweek.blogspot.com/2013/07/mother-in-law-for-roommate.html
In Tete, Mozambique! Monday, July 8, 2013. Mother-in-law for a roommate! Just ask my mom. I'm not that easy to live with! After 5 months living with her in Alabama, we spent 5 months living in England. Now we are spending about 2 months living with my in-laws in Sweden. For some people, this would be a nightmare. For us, it is a blessing with certain challenges! Mother-in-law in Swedish is. Swearmother" the connotations are ancient! One might feel a little inferior in her presence! But, we are family and...

MozamWeek: Nyungwe
http://mozamweek.blogspot.com/p/nyungwe.html
In Tete, Mozambique! Nyungwe is a language spoken in west central Mozambique. No real statistic has been verified as to number of speakers - somewhere between 300,000 and 500,000 probably (loosely based on census stats for districts where Nyungwe is likely to be spoken). Sample Nyungwe texts can be found at LIDEMO.NET. In addition to these publications, there is a dictionary and grammar volume published in 1899/1900 by the Catholics. More recently, there is a grammar/dictionary done by the Combonianos.

MozamWeek: My fellow Americans...
http://mozamweek.blogspot.com/2015/05/my-fellow-americans.html
In Tete, Mozambique! Monday, May 4, 2015. Thank you for paying your taxes. Thank you for allowing your tax money to fund projects in Africa. Thank you for publishing 18 little stories that are given to kids in many schools in Mozambique. Did you know that your tax money is helping to teach teachers to teach kids to read in one of the poorest countries in the world? This is what I would do if I had more money, contacts and influence here. Congratulations! Monday, May 04, 2015. View my complete profile.

In Tete, Mozambique! Monday, September 23, 2013. Be still and know. My friend Gigi takes amazing pictures. She has lived in Tete for about 3 years or so. She has shown me the beauty of the place around me and I look at my African home differently. I want to thank Gigi for showing so many of us here in this dry, dusty place where the beauty is. Her blog is SnappingAfrica. How impatient we are!

MozamWeek: In the evening...
http://mozamweek.blogspot.com/2013/05/in-evening.html
In Tete, Mozambique! Thursday, May 2, 2013. Today I was reminded that at noon in the USA, it is almost nightfall in Mozambique. I spent a few minutes thinking through what nightfall in Tete is like for some of my friends. I'm feeling a little more homesick these days. Africa calls and I can't be there right now. I can remember and breath a prayer, though. Read along and maybe you will, too. In the stew. Pumpkin leaves are my favorite. Finally it is completely dark and silence falls and even those passing...

In Tete, Mozambique! Monday, March 23, 2015. Ona ico. tricky situations in book distribution. All of the traditional titles of our children's books have been welcomed in Nyungwe communities.
