Sparks From Stones

From cold stones sparks of fire do fly. Friday, April 10, 2015. There is a memorable poem by Martin Kratz in most recent but one issue of The Rialto. Called 'Curriculum'. I say it is memorable because I remembered it, after skimming through the issue when it arrived, before mislaying it. Interestingly I had misremembered the title as being 'Testudo' which is a key word in the culminating final stanza of the poem. We go to fetch them in, someone shouts: Testudo! In silence, they wait for instruction.

Sparks From Stones: Surface Faults

http://sparksfromstones.blogspot.com/2014/10/surface-faults.html

From cold stones sparks of fire do fly. Friday, October 3, 2014. One of the neglected books published in that momentous year 1922 is Robert Graves' On English Poetry. William Heinemann). From the vantage point of 2014 its 61 short and chatty sections read very like blog posts. Sadly much of this book and much of Graves' Poetic Unreason and other studies. 1925, Cecil Palmer) are omitted — following Graves' own later abridgements — from the Collected Writings on Poetry. In club or messroom let them sit,.

From cold stones sparks of fire do fly. Thursday, June 14, 2012. Singular Intensity - Concentrating All Her Gifts. Mark Doty described Lynda Hull's all-or-nothing approach to writing, and how this worked on him as an influnce: "She worked at her art with a singular intensity, and in each new poem she'd raise the stakes as high as she could, putting everything at risk, putting herself into her coruscating, elegant texts. So one had to live up to that, poems had to matter that much.". I remember reading so...

From cold stones sparks of fire do fly. Saturday, April 5, 2014. Never trust a poet who can drive. Nothing ever happens to novelists. Except - this. They are born. They get sick, they get well, they hang around the inkwell. They leave home, with their stuff in a hired van. They learn to drive, unlike poets (poets don't drive. Never trust a poet who can drive. Never trust a poet at the wheel. If he can. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Software designer and Infrequent poet.

Sparks From Stones: October 2013

http://sparksfromstones.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

From cold stones sparks of fire do fly. Wednesday, October 23, 2013. The recent brief uproar on plagiarism still vexes me. There was much public condemnation of poetic processes which involved shallow reworkings, borrowings, appropriation, and theft - choose your terminology to match your level of moral outrage. The first instance that came to my attention was the case of an Australian poet who had apparently lifted phrases from a considerable number of sources to concoct a prize-winning poem. Now we can...

A place for recording passing thoughts usually arising while reading. Saturday, September 27, 2014. In 1971 Frank Auerbach wrote: "Your correspondents tend to write of paintings as objects of financial value or passive beauty.
