All of Bruce’s instruments that I’ve had the pleasure of playing have one characteristic that I cherish and that is a rare find in modern didgeridoo crafting balance. The mix of backpressure, elasticity and the relationship between drone and toot are always spot on and his sticks are a pleasure to play be they a bouncy F# or a more mellow Eb. You can tell that Bruce has lovingly crafted each instrument and really paid attention to the bore’s characteristics to achieve this balance and level of playability.

How I make the didges. Below are the highlights of my didge making method. Everything is done by hand. I’ve tried power tools but can’t get the same feel nor can I be as precise. Working by hand I can observe as I work, following the timber to get the best from each piece. The raw timbers are all termite-hollowed Eucalyptus cut under State Government permit from trees in far northern Australia. Care is taken to ensure only good logs are taken. I use several grades of sand paper to reduce the outside to a...

How do you hollow the logs out? I don’t. There is a species of termite which eats a nice even hollow out of the centre of the tree while it is still alive and standing. I find these trees and remove the didgeridoo-sized branches, already hollow. Where do the logs come from? All the logs come from far northern Australia ( N.T. and Qld), a region of Australia where the termites mentioned above exist in large numbers. What type of wood is it? I use three different types of Eucalyptus tree to make my didges:.
