Saturday, June 20, 2015. Van Morrison at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium June 19, 2015. On Friday, June 19, 2015, I got the chance to see Van Morrison perform at the iconic Forest Hills Tennis Stadium. If you live in Huntington, the way to get there is on the Long Island Railroad, and I have to say they did a fantastic job getting us there and home again. The round trip cost only $15.00 to Forest Hills Station! There was a ticket booth, but we had gotten our tickets on line and printed them out. Taj Mahal wa...

Tuesday, April 29, 2014. Spring Flowering Bulbs in the Jarvis House Garden 2014. Although we had a very cold, snowy, and long winter the Spring flowering bulbs did not suffer much underground, as did some of the Jarvis Garden shrubs. Over the years the collection of Narcissus, Daffodil, and mini daffodils, has grown to include quite a variety of sizes and colors. There are both pink and blue Hyacinths. Here is the yellow flower of the insidious Marsh Marigold, next to a very tiny blue star shaped flower.

Thursday, March 6, 2014. Saving the Mute Swan. About a month ago a friend and watcher of Mute Swan mentioned to me that the New York State DEC was promoting a draft plan to eliminate all of the Mute Swan in our state. At first I thought that he was just telling me a joke, because we both spend a lot of time enjoying several Mute Swan in Huntington Harbor, along East Shore Road, and we dearly love them. And everything else that I could find on the history of the Mute Swan in New York. In a world where the...

Sunday, January 5, 2014. Corn and Potato Chowder for a Really Cold Day. When the weather here on Long island gets unusually cold, its time to make Chowder. I gathered the ingredients for Corn and Potato Chowder. This is a vintage cookbook that I purchased at the thrift shop. Some of the ideas are charming, and out of date, but the basic recipes are excellent. I added cooked bacon to the recipe. The first ingredient was two chopped onions. They smelled and looked so good. Two cups of water was added.

Wednesday, June 24, 2015. Robert Moses Beach June 2015. This was our first trip to Robert Moses Beach, 2015, which is on the south shore of Long Island. It was a really windy and gray day when we got there around 10:30 in the morning. The snack bar was not ready for the new season's customers. The Sea Gulls were flying above hoping not to miss anything, especially food scraps. They can be very aggressive, so hold on to your food. The Italian inspired "Pencil" tower at the entrance to the parking lots.

Thursday, November 27, 2014. Stuffing 101 An Essential Roast Turkey Side Dish. This is the recipe for stuffing that my mother,Rose Guglielmino, used to make for the holidays. Our whole family loved roasted turkey and especially the way she made the stuffing. The stuffing was always made in a separate pan, not inside the bird. I guess that Rose was ahead of her time. She would make an extra large amount to go along with leftovers. After I cut it into circles then cubes,. Set it aside until later. Freeze a...

Sunday, March 15, 2015. Garden Work Clipping off the Winter Kill on Shrubs. The winter of 2015 started out fairly quiet through January. Then February hit and Long Island had several really awful snow storms and record breaking cold weather. The snow just wouldn't go away. Many of the shrubs in the Jarvis House Garden were weighted down by this heavy wet snow. The leaves on this Rhododendron really got burned. So you may as well cut them out now. They never seem to come back after looking like that.
