The Steam Ship Freshspring is the only surviving example of the 14 Fresh class water carriers built by Lytham Shipbuilding and Engineering Co for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA). She returned to the UK in 1967 to replace a sister ship, Freshpond, at Devonport. Prior to being put into reserve in 1976 at Gareloch, she also worked in and around the Clyde and Pembroke docks and she was surveyed and refitted at Ardrossan in 1969.

Centre furnace front on the deck with the parts previously removed placed back on it for safe keeping. In the background you can see the furnace tube where it has been cleaned back and coated. Outside of the tube plate around furnace tube before chipping. After chipping and a quick once over with a wire brush where access was possible.

It's been a few months since I last ran up the GT6 so the battery charger went on midday Friday and after work that day and quite a bit of cranking to get the fuel back through to the injectors she fired up. Just a quick run around the block but enough to free off the brakes and get up to temperature. And the reason for leaving the GT6 for so long?

SS Explorer Preservation Society. We are please to learn that the SS Freshspring, a former RMAS, steam driven water tanker is receiving some loving care. The Freshspring was completed in 1946 and seen service in Malta until the mid 70's when she was withdrawn. The ship has been languishing in a mud berth on the River Severn for circa 25 years. Several enthusiasts are currently forming a preservation society with the aim to restoring the Freshspring.
