Back In Birdland: December 2014
http://backinbirdland.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Hot Birds of 2014. Another year over, and here are some of my best bits birding in 2014. My first trip out was just down the road from home, to see a Glossy Ibis, although this was not a new species for me, it was a scarcity for Bedfordshire. In Feb' Sarah and I along with friends, Mark,Gill,Jill, travelled to Extramadura to visit our friend Neil and get in some fantastic birding. The weather was awful, with rain and flooding! A trip into Cambridgeshire at Fen Drayton for the stunning Baikal Teal. A shor...

Another New Garden Species. Toadflax Brocade. That was easy enough.he laughs. It was time to get the camera and grab a few shots. Another Painted Lady. August 2014. And a day later another surprise.scroll down for what? Well the image below now lets you know what that surprise was. After no activity for some time, I thought the emerging season for the Southern Hawkers had finished and here I was finding one on the 8th August, the figure now must be nearer 30. It was a place that was easy going on foot an...

Back In Birdland: June 2014

Emerging Hawkers in the pond. June 2014. Monday 30th June 2014. The image above was the 2nd Hawker to emerge, it was well on the way to fully drying out. The 3rd Southern Hawker above had not been out for long, with the wings fully extended they now had to dry and harden. With the sun flitting in and out of the reed plants, I took as many pictures as I could, keeping an eye on the last one still waiting to emerge. It proceeded to slowly push out and then the head was free from the casing. Then all of them.

Back In Birdland: July 2014
http://backinbirdland.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Picnic at Bison Hill. July 2014. There were lots of lovely Marbled Whites on the wing and many Chalk-hill Blue's. Skippers were everywhere as were Six-spot Burnet moths. We sat in the shade of a tree and had a picnic whilst watching the butterflies flit past, definitely a chilled out day. Butterfly Searching. The Lodge, Sandy July 2014. The Red Admirals are stunning, even alongside the Peacocks they compare just as beautiful. On the Buddhelia there were good numbers of Six Spot Burnet moths. Sarah and I ...

Thing's finally ADD(er) up! Maybe it was too early for this location? Here we go again we thought, and then on our last sweep of the heath.I found one! Thank the Snake Gods, Oh my what a relief, I couldn't believe it, after all these visits we had finally found one. The image above is how I found the 1st one, tucked under the edge of a heather bush.and did you notice I said "1st"? Of course the snake then departed the scene, and the dog then ran off with one of my Dads gloves! After a while the Pipits we...

Back In Birdland: Excellent Extremadura & Great Gredos. Spain 2015.
http://backinbirdland.blogspot.com/2015/05/excellent-extramadura-spain-2015.html
Excellent Extremadura and Great Gredos. Spain 2015. By the time we had finished our food and drinks the weather had indeed started to clear, we moved just a few hundred yards from the restaurant and parked up on a small roundabout, now the sun was out the raptors were starting to appear. And what a great spot it turned out to be. Waders included Common Sandpiper, and a few Black Winged Stilts. The walks were to be a highlight every morning we ventured out, the abundance of different birds and wildlife is...

Surf Scoter brings the Holiday to and End! Shopping trips, pubs and meals out ensued but on our last day out we took a walk out into Holkham Gap and connected with the adult Surf Scoter ( my Dad hadn't seen one before). A fitting end to a great holiday in Norfolk, a shame we had to leave. Birding at Cley and more Rutting at Holkham. With Sarah sat up on a fallen tree trunk, we continued to enjoy this spectacle well into the afternoon. Warwick Castle and Birds of Prey Shows. The Egyptian Vulture was a rea...

Back In Birdland: February 2014
http://backinbirdland.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Extramadura. Spain February 2014. It's been a week since we returned from Spain and I'm still missing the place. Along with my wife Sarah, we joined friends Mark and Gill, Jill on what was a truly lovely trip, despite the weather. The birding listing started as soon as we landed and as we travelled the motorway it was evident the most common bird around was Red Kite. By the time we had reached our meeting point out of Madrid we were on 30 Kites! Probably 70 by the end of the day, and nesting everywhere.

Well, as was expected really, the two Trumpeter Swans at Boyton Marshes are indeed escapees. The message came through on the pager that they had escaped from Letheringham Lodge near Wickham Market. No payout on these birds, shouldn't they be ringed though? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Bedfordshire, United Kingdom. View my complete profile. Click on the images to view them larger.
