St Peter's Church, shortly after the first service on Sept. 4, 1761. Nothing Less Than a New Church. The Rev. Dr. Richard Jenney was not eager to face the situation some of the members of his parish who lived at the southern edge of Philadelphia were creating. Dr Jenney was worried about the effects of the departure of so many prosperous parishioners, not least among them merchant and mayor William Plumsted, on the pew-rent income of Christ Church and did not embrace the idea. Snyder, who began attending St. Peter's Church at the age of eight in 1917, found his work's meaning in a Bible verse: I have not come to call the righteous but the outcast. Osage orange trees are planted in the churchyard from cuttings acquired during the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The Blackwell House (present St. Peter’s House) is completed for the Rev. Robert Blackwell, assistant rector of the United Churches. St James at Seventh and Market Streets becomes the third of the United Churches until 1828. Sunday School is established by th. Bishop White founds the parish day school.

FAITH IN ACTION FOR 250 YEARS. THE MAN IN BLACK. On a Wednesday evening in April 1862,. A figure dressed in black was observed walking slowly along the brick top of St. Peter’s tower. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on April 4, two days after the event, that a large crowd soon gathered, expecting the individual to fall every moment.
