The Long, Winding Journey from Ability to Disability. Life is slowing down. Without much else to do, I’ve taken the time to read, which is something I was unable to enjoy with regularity during the school year. Right now I’m reading a book called. There has to be a way, right? How can I find a way to regain my wonder for the world, my feeling of exploration and curiosity, despite my challenges? Am I destined to become this risk-averse hermit? Is this what I’ve become? Of course I will. I thought ahead to...

The Long, Winding Journey from Ability to Disability. 2016 Jain Foundation 2B Empowered Conference. I was thrilled to speak at this conference for several reasons. First off – I’ve never been to Texas. This is actually the farthest away from home I’ve ever been. Second, I would have the opportunity to meet many people I only knew online through the Discovering Dysferlinopathy. 8221; at the airport was the set of taps at the hotel bar. You don’t see Lonestar on tap in New England. Pounded against the wind...

The Long, Winding Journey from Ability to Disability. The truth is, I’ve always wanted to write a book, but I never thought I’d write a memoir. I’ve always had fictional stories running through my mind, but it wasn’t until recently that I considered writing the most truthful story I know – my own. I have been hesitant to get started, because the task seems so,. The final straw was a memoir I read this past week,. When Breath Becomes Air,. By Paul Kalanithi. It is the story of a 36-year old neurosurge...

The Long, Winding Journey from Ability to Disability. I still can’t believe I ended up in New York. So naturally, where am I writing this from? When you can’t walk the streets, find a rooftop. 8221; or “What happened to your leg? 8221; as I fill up my cup of water or while I’m being driven to work. Some people have asked where I live, and when I tell them it’s only three blocks away, they say “Oh nice, it’s not a bad walk then.” For that answer, it’s best to nod. The Long, Winding Journey from Ability to Disability. 25 Years of the ADA. On July 26, 1990 – 25 years ago today – the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush. However, to nitpick the law for its flaws is to miss the point entirely. The ADA was one colossal step in the right direction. Before – reading about it gave me chills. Here is a TED talk about Ekso from 2011 that is one of my all-time favorite TED talks:. Click to email (Opens in new window). July 26, 2015.

One Step Backwards | Sidewalks and Stairwells
https://sidewalksandstairwells.com/2015/07/12/one-step-backwards
The Long, Winding Journey from Ability to Disability. Today I was at a restaurant that had one step to enter. This normally isn’t an issue for me, however the step was a considerable height, high enough where I needed someone to help lift me under the armpits in order to get in the door. Come on. Most buildings that have one step to enter could easily put in a ramp, or even keep a portable ramp as a short-term solution. One step is infuriating. Why not make it level with the street? July 12, 2015. WeR...
