Monthly Archive: August 2014. Welcome to Suburban Farmacy. Our goal is to share our discoveries on the road to finding and growing food and medicinal plants on our suburban homestead. Why, you might ask, would we want to grow medicine instead of getting it from the pharmacy? Don’t we believe in medicine? What’s wrong with us? I think the …. Continue reading ». Fight the Flu with Elderberry. Plantain has some pretty amazing features. Sadly most homes consider this a weed and spray to get rid of them. As a food source the young leaves are edible raw older leaves can be cooked. The taste is similar to chard. The seeds are also edible when ground into flour although considering the size of the seeds it might be a challenge to collect enough. On Green Med Info. Many of our plants are edible. Not edible like a tomato, but edible in that you can make tea from them. Spearmint, Clover, Oswego Tea (red Bee Balm) and Lemon Balm are four that readily lend themselves to the tea making process. A final one we don’t have in our yard (yet) but hope to …. Giant Leaves – What is it? | What's In My Yard

What's In My Yard. Photo Blog of All Nature in Our Suburban Yard. Giant Leaves – What is it? A quick posting today. What bi-annual has giant leaves and is a widespread common plant? Although most people don’t know, it’s actually edible with younger leaves and the stalks eaten in the spring and the root can be sliced pickled resulting in something very similar to traditional pickles. To give a sense of size of the leaves, here’s my hand and forearm. By Gary & Therese on June 20, 2015. A Member of…. Build ...

What's In My Yard. Photo Blog of All Nature in Our Suburban Yard. Last year we bought a couple of Comfrey plants. They did OK but never really flourished. This year only one of the two plants came up. The cold of winter must have killed off the other one. Our remaining plant has really exploded with growth. Last year it was just a foot tall with a half dozen leaves. Also, unlike last year, it put out flowers this year. Purple flowers reminiscent of Virginia Bluebells. By Gary & Therese on May 31, 2015.

Monday, August 3, 2015. When Microsoft launched their new Windows 10 with a lot of hoopla in area stores, I decided to go to the one in Bellevue Square (Bellevue is a city right next to Redmond, the headquarters of Microsoft.) Why? When I got to the mall, they had kiosks set up to introduce people to Windows 10. Very impressive. They would snag people walking by and walk them through it. Since I had no intention of loading the new system for the next couple months (to let Microsoft get feedback f...While...

Suburban Farm Biz - Microscale Farming in the Burbs

Microscale Farming in the Burbs. Our first keyhole garden was built this weekend. I had to make two trips to our local big box garden center to purchase the 12 inch paver bricks. I ended up buying a total of sixty-four bricks with 8 bricks left over from this build. The bricks cost $1.80 each so the total cost of the project was about $100 total. Below are some helpful links I found on building keyhole gardens. Http:/ www.inspirationgreen.com/keyhole-gardens.html. February 23, 2015.

The Suburban Farm

July 6, 2015. Four years ago today I went into the hospital at 8:30 in the morning. Four hours later Ferris was born. In the beginning he was the most serious baby we had ever met. Ryan and I constantly joked about how “this was not in the brochure.” And then he discovered how to smile and all that seriousness vanished. Today he’s four. His favorite person in the whole wide world is his big brother, he LOVES the color black, and will eat peanut butter and jelly for three meals a day. He is. March 2, 2015.

Farm where you are. Thursday, March 24, 2011. A gardener's journey of faith. My word for this year was serious,. But now I think it should have been journey. I was shaky in my own faith and so it made me wonder; How can a woman who has lived that long in life believe that once you die that's it? You go in the ground and compost is your only legacy, your only reward? For some reason, that revelation shook my entire faith existence and for a few years, I was actually ambivalent. My friend Jeanne told me, "...
