A fool on a hill...: December 2014

http://www.suepurkiss.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

A fool on a hill. Sue Purkiss, writing (mainly) about books. Wednesday, 17 December 2014. If anyone's looking for a late present for someone who loves beautiful books, I can thoroughly recommend The Sleeper and the Spindle. Written by Neil Gaiman, illustrated by Chris Riddell, and published by Bloomsbury. It's a re-imagining of The Sleeping Beauty. It's an absolute treat. This is a newly published book. But my favourite Christmas read first appeared in 1973. The Dark Is Rising,. They all draw on Susan Co...

A fool on a hill. Sue Purkiss, writing (mainly) about books. Monday, 27 April 2015. Capital, by John Lanchester. It's not so very often that you come across a book that offers keenly observed characters, a forensic analysis of the rise of wealth among the banking classes, a commentary on immigration from the point of view of a variety of immigrants, an insight into the worlds of football and contemporary art and much more besides - and does it all with lashings of warmth and humour. Capital. And photogra...

A fool on a hill. Sue Purkiss, writing (mainly) about books. Sunday, 19 July 2015. Looking at the Stars, by Jo Cotterill. A couple of weeks ago, I was at a gathering of children's writers in Oxfordshire. It's an annual event, held in a mellow golden stone manor house owned by the Society of Friends - the Quakers. It's a lovely setting, and the conference is always a great opportunity to relax and re-charge the writing batteries in the company of other writers. Have you read any good teenage novels lately?

A fool on a hill...: The Buried Giant, by Kazuo Ishiguro

A fool on a hill. Sue Purkiss, writing (mainly) about books. Thursday, 21 May 2015. The Buried Giant, by Kazuo Ishiguro. The first book I read by Kazuo Ishiguro was An Artist of the Floating World. I had taken my son up to Warwick University for an open day, and while he looked round, I bought this from the book shop. (I wonder if it still has one? Since then, I've read and enjoyed some of his books but found others more challenging. Now I've just read The Unburied Giant. This is just a preliminary respo...

The History Girls: Australia (and my family) from the 1920s - Gillian Polack

http://the-history-girls.blogspot.com/2015/08/australian-and-my-family-from-1920s.html

Sunday, 2 August 2015. Australia (and my family) from the 1920s - Gillian Polack. The anniversary of my father’s death is coming up. I will light a candle in his memory and I will tell bad jokes so that his sense of humour is not forgotten. I will miss him, as I always do. This year is different. Dad died in 1988, but a whole group of his friends died this year, in their early 90s. The last of his generation is fading. Victorian rural house, 1970s. I was born in the year between the Baby Boom and the nex...

The History Girls: Atticus Finch, by Leslie Wilson

http://the-history-girls.blogspot.com/2015/07/atticus-finch-by-leslie-wilson.html

Thursday, 23 July 2015. Atticus Finch, by Leslie Wilson. So: it's out at last, the long-awaited 'sequel' (though it was actually the precursor) of the beloved 'To Kill a Mockingbird.' I can't have been the only one who, when she first read that 'Go Set a Watchman' dealt with the later life of Scout and Atticus Finch, imagined them both marching forward into the '50s with anti-racist banners waving. How naïve of me! Because even 'Mockingbird', when I read it, left me uneasy about Atticus's views. And Scou...

And sat with me on Neptune's yellow sands,. Marking the embarked traders on the flood,. When we have laugh'd to see the sails conceive. And grow big-bellied with the wanton wind;. http://the-history-girls.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-vincent-van-gogh-museum-amsterdam.html

Saturday, 16 May 2015. The Vincent Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam: Sue Purkiss. Vincent Van Gogh must be one of the best-known and most popular painters of them all. Who wouldn’t recognise his painting of sunflowers? Or the self-portrait with the bandaged ear? Or the picture of a bedroom in his house in Arles? Parts of his life story are almost equally well-known: the story behind that bandaged ear, for instance. The interior of the museum. Montmarte: windmills and allotments. He rented four rooms in what be...
