The Institute for Alcoholic Experimentation: The purple reign of Parfait Amour
http://instituteforalcoholicexperimentation.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-purple-reign-of-parfait-amour.html
Thursday, 30 July 2015. The purple reign of Parfait Amour. By chance I found myself with three different brands of Parfait Amour in the house recently—Bols, Boudier and Cartron. This liqueur is possibly most used in cocktails for its purple colour, but despite its similarity in this respect to crème de violette. Left to right) Boudier, Bols and Cartron. Has nothing to say about this liqueur, but I gather that curaçao oranges, rose petals, vanilla and almonds go into it. From 1930 has just two (there are ...

The Institute for Alcoholic Experimentation: Tequila: busting myths and fighting red tape
http://instituteforalcoholicexperimentation.blogspot.com/2013/07/tequila-busting-myths-and-fighting-red.html
Wednesday, 24 July 2013. Tequila: busting myths and fighting red tape. Matthias addresses the mob. The New Sheridan Club. 8217;s summer party on Saturday had (rather inexplicably, I admit) a Mexican theme. It proved a rich seam, with Frida Kahlo rubbing shoulders with Zorro, plenty of bandidos. Who came with a bloodied chainsaw and the head of a drug rival in a bucket. Our games included cutting the heart. From an Aztec sacrificial victim and shooting a glass. Unaged spirit and the reposado. The product&...

The Institute for Alcoholic Experimentation: Bar tools: is copper proper?
http://instituteforalcoholicexperimentation.blogspot.com/2015/06/bar-tools-is-copper-proper.html
Tuesday, 23 June 2015. Bar tools: is copper proper? The copper-plated items from Sainsbury's with the ingredients for a White Lady. In my neighbourhood when I saw, behind their freshly fitted-out bar, a whole array of copper plated tools, including hawthorn strainers, bar spoons, jiggers and tongs. I subsequently discovered that Cocktail Kingdom. Sells all this stuff, which I suspect is where the restaurant got it from. They even sell copper-plated speed pourers. What was the thinking here? After fine st...

The Institute for Alcoholic Experimentation: Don't cry for me: Argentine cocktails, anyone?
http://instituteforalcoholicexperimentation.blogspot.com/2012/01/dont-cry-for-me-argentine-cocktails.html
Monday, 30 January 2012. Don't cry for me: Argentine cocktails, anyone? Tato with a clericot. That he has just made me. Santiago Policastro, known as “Pichin”. The cocktail menu at Galante is divided into sections: first come Pichin’s own classics, adapted from recipes he published in his 1955 book Tragos Mágicos. Tea that everyone stands around sipping. It comes in large, loose leaves and is drunk through a metal straw called a bombilla. An El Pato, with toothsome nibbles in the background. 1724 has a f...

The Institute for Alcoholic Experimentation: Kopparberg Blackberry & Lime and Kopparberg Winter Fruits
http://instituteforalcoholicexperimentation.blogspot.com/2012/11/kopparberg-blackberry-lime-and.html
Friday, 30 November 2012. Kopparberg Blackberry and Lime and Kopparberg Winter Fruits. Blackberry with the faintest hint of lime. Some sweetness, sweet berry, quite creamy, medium-high fizz. OK, but not amazing. Quite fresh and crisp; I still don't taste any lime but thirst-quenching and nice enough. The plain blackberry Kopparberg was one of my favourite, this isn't a patch on that—the inclusion of lime seems rather pointless. Kopparberg with Winter Fruit. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Is a regula...
