Simon Taylor had the initial idea for the club. He wrote a letter to Practical Computing which was published in the August 1979 issue. Somehow he found Andy's address and called round with an invitation. Others saw the letter in Practical Computing and telephoned Simon. Soon there were enough interested people and Simon organised the first meeting. Initially this was at a shop in Ashford. Andy is the Managing Director, Chief Programmer and General Dogsbody for a small embedded systems design company in Sunbury-on-Thames. Previous jobs include Mainframe Computer Engineer and Technical Director of a games software house. Married to Marion, with 3 adult daughters and 4 grand-children. Trophy

One club night Steve walked in with a potato. He had sliced it up and separated the slices with pieces of a plastic bag . He had then inserted industrial staples between the slices and pushed an LED into the end pieces. The potato formed a primitive battery, and the LED lit up. For the original Spud-u-Lite. We've all forgotten what he got it for! Probably for an extra specially corny joke. For his flashing buttonhole. To make sure he returned the next year.

These days everyone in the club has one or more PCs. In the early days of the club, computers were few and far between. Hardware was very much more varied, with most equipment being supplied in kit form. Here are some of the machines club members have built and owned. An advanced machine for its day, though expensive. Boating

Our boat is called Amberel (naturally) and she is berthed on the Thames at Chertsey. Unfortunately this is now all in the past - I sold the boat as the overheads were just too great to justify keeping her. The only boats I have now are a canoe and a dinghy. It's a great activity to combine with other interests. For the last 15 or so years we have enjoyed an annual outing for the Sunbury Computer Club. And now have several trips each year with geocaching friends (see details).

Not too much to say here, either. Andy enjoys playing with computers, despite working with them all day. He is a founder member of Sunbury Computer Club. Which must be one of the oldest computer clubs around, having been in continuous active existence since 1979. Andy also enjoys riding motor-cycles, though these days that means a 300cc scooter. This combines well with other activities such as geocaching. And he really enjoys time away in the campervan, which also fits perfectly with geocaching.
