March | 2016 | Survive & Thrive
https://surviveandthrivesite.wordpress.com/2016/03
Adventures in cross-cultural living. March 28, 2016. March 28, 2016. Do you ever feel like you are in over your head? Stretched to the limit? I sure do. Living in China gives me many painful stretching opportunities. And some days I don’t handle it very well. I said something like this to my husband just yesterday, “Everything I do here is difficult! Why does nothing come easily? Why doesn’t anything feel right or like it’s what I’m supposed to be doing? I’m totally inadequate for this! 8220;All hopeless...

Adventures in cross-cultural living. Sweet Alice Blue Gown. November 25, 2016. Part Five: Summer on the Sheep Ranch. After school let out we left Trinidad, and spent that summer on a sheep ranch near Lodi, California. Daddy was the caretaker, and spent his time out with the sheep and irrigating the crops that also grew there. The house we lived in was a big, stuffy two storied structure that did not feel like a home. I learned to whistle while we lived there. The Redwood Highway today. Roger Williams, &#...

Adventures in cross-cultural living. January 3, 2017. Alice’s Story: Part Eight. While we lived at Hartsook Inn, my parents always had their vacation at Christmas time because they couldn’t leave during the summer. Most every Christmas was spent at Balboa Island with Uncle John and Aunt Della. We would also see my dad’s other brothers who lived in Southern California. My school troubles ended shortly, and the Christmas holiday with John and Della was pleasant, as always. Alice’s Story-Part 10.

Adventures in cross-cultural living. Olympic Park Observation Tower. September 15, 2016. September 15, 2016. As you can see, there are glass panels in the floor that allow you to see through to the ground below. Everyone was a bit weak-kneed at first, but we all ventured out over the empty space. Some stayed there longer than others! Here we are with Susannah at the top. I borrowed this image from her Facebook page. And this is the only pic I have to prove that Karina and Elaina were with us! I’ll ...

Adventures in cross-cultural living. Family Trip to Xi’An. June 30, 2016. July 4, 2016. Xi’an is the oldest of the ancient capitals of China and the city nearest to the site where the Terra Cotta soldiers were discovered in 1974. We’ve wanted to visit this city for years, and since Ian is leaving for college next month, we thought we had better go for it. The next morning Rodney and I let the kids sleep in and took a walk to the Bell Tower museum in the center of the city. It was built during the Min...

Red Letter Days: December 2014
http://redletterdayact.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Thursday, December 11, 2014. I can't believe there is only one month left until Shirley is one year old! This month has been full of new things for Shirley:. She has started taking steps. She usually only takes one or two, but one day she took six or seven! I was home alone with her and pretty much went crazy. It might have scared her because she hasn't done it since. I'm not really complaining though. I know it will come soon enough! It's a book about a dog finding his bed. At one point he splashes ...
Red Letter Days: October 2014
http://redletterdayact.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Thursday, October 30, 2014. My friend, Jennifer, wrote a book. Everyday Poetry: Looking on the Bright Side of Life. When I think of Jen, two words come immediately to mind;. Jen deeply values friendships and she is a faithful friend herself. She regularly hosts get togethers, whether it involves coffee at a local coffee shop or dinner and a movie at her house. She cares for others and this is seen in her thoughtfulness. Why am I going on about these two character traits of hers? I have to admit, my favor...
Red Letter Days: Hiking
http://redletterdayact.blogspot.com/2015/03/hiking.html
Monday, March 30, 2015. Kwacha, Shirley and I have started a new thing. Well, new for us. We hike! Actually I wouldn't even say that hiking is new for us, but habitual. Hiking is. We've gone hiking in a number of places but we've landed on a favorite. The above picture is my favorite spot on the trail and it pretty much looks exactly like this. I barely touched that photo. Going on frequent hikes has allowed us to see things we wouldn't see if we only went ever so often. We have seen beetles (oh joy!
Red Letter Days: February 2015

Thursday, February 19, 2015. Book Review: Gone With the Wind. Many years ago my mom convinced me to watch the film version of Gone With the Wind. I remembered two things about it; it was unfathomably long and I could not stand Scarlett O'Hara. Well, about a month ago I was alone at my mom's house waiting for the laundry to finish so I could head home. I meandered through my mom's books and saw Gone With the Wind. And this continued on and on. I don't think it's ever pleasant to see someone else's sin...

Red Letter Days: July 2015
http://redletterdayact.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Tuesday, July 21, 2015. Just thinking about Malawi today as I look at pictures of our trip that was almost a year ago! Hard to believe. It's also hard to believe that Kwacha's sister, Evelyn, and our niece, Charity, are going to be here in less than a month! I don't have much to say today besides that, and the fact that this is one of my favorite pictures of Kwacha. Ever. In the middle of a tea plantation. Shirley wasn't such a fan. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). First Day of School. Announcing my New Ebook!
Red Letter Days: November 2014
http://redletterdayact.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Thursday, November 20, 2014. The Companionship of the Lord Himself. I don't really have anything in particular to write about today, except some random thoughts perhaps. Shirley is wonderful to me but there are other things in life besides Shirley. Happen is never productive. What is the point in worrying about something that may not happen (and usually won't)? I think it comes down to this:. Do I love God more than anyone or anything else? That is an extremely comforting thought. It's a quote from.
Red Letter Days: January 2015

Monday, January 12, 2015. My One Year Old. Shirley is now one year old. As of yesterday. She's officially no longer considered a baby but a toddler! How can I even begin to describe how much I love her? She's now walking all over the place, like a little waddling penguin. I have a bag of clothes of hers that I'm getting ready to donate (In fact, anyone have a little girl under a year that's in need of clothes? And she'll take one piece out at a time and walk around dragging it behind. I thought that bein...
Red Letter Days: Ramblings on Baby Number Two
http://redletterdayact.blogspot.com/2015/08/ramblings-on-baby-number-two.html
Monday, August 10, 2015. Ramblings on Baby Number Two. Poor second babies. You know what I mean, don't you? I don't think I have to explain. But, just so you know, I am definitely JUST as excited for baby # 2! I just haven't blogged about him or her yet. I would post the ultrasound picture of our little lemon (lemon being a good thing here, that's how big our baby is right now! But I'm not at home at the moment and I don't have it with me. There are some things I am nervous about; nursing again, trying t...
Red Letter Days: August 2014
http://redletterdayact.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Wednesday, August 13, 2014. Shirley at Seven Months. So I think this may be a record for me. This might be the fastest I've ever gotten Shirley's monthly pictures up. But we're leaving for Malawi in less than two weeks, so a girl's got to do what a girl's got to do. This girl is just so much fun! I always hoped that my kids would have personality, but I always feared that they wouldn't in the end. Well, Shirley did not disappoint. But I think I said that last time. The Bible says that "children are a ble...
