Take me to the bookshelf. Friday, March 7, 2014. Excalibur Visionaries - Warren Ellis Vol. 3, Warren Ellis. Based on Muir Island, Excalibur has become Europe's most famous team of super heroes; now, they face their deadliest threat yet! The Hellfire Club has infiltrated the British government, and they've got a powerful demon at their beck and call! Plus: Pete Wisdom and Kitty Pryde track a serial killer! Don't miss some of Warren Ellis' finest work! It is a well made comic. But it isn't a great one.

Take me to the bookshelf. Saturday, January 4, 2014. Godzilla: The Half Century War, James Stokoe. The year is 1954 and Lieutnant Ota Murakami is on hand when Godzilla makes first landfall in Japan. Along with his pal Kentaro, Ota makes a desperate gamble to save lives. and in the process begins an obsession with the King of the Monsters that lasts fifty years! I really can't recommend this book enough - if you like Godzilla, non-superhero comics or just incredibly detailed art, then you HAVE to read this.

Take me to the bookshelf. Tuesday, October 28, 2014. The Shining Girls, Lauren Beukes. The girl who wouldn’t die – hunting a killer who shouldn’t exist. A bizarre little beauty of a book, this time travel serial killer murder mystery who-dunnit, is, as that description suggests, a mish-mash of all sorts of genres that shouldn't really work but do. Really enjoyable book. Perfect thriller. Audrey Niffenegger, The Time Travelers Wife. Robert Harris, Silence of the Lambs. This is, for me, probably the best b...

Take me to the bookshelf. Friday, August 8, 2014. Doctor Sleep, Stephen King. Hat happened to Danny Torrance, the boy at the heart of The Shining, after his terrible experience in the Overlook Hotel? The instantly riveting Doctor Sleep picks up the story of the now middle-aged Dan, working at a hospice in rural New Hampshire, and the very special twelve-year old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals. And for all that I think his strength is actually his short stories King has given me e...

Take me to the bookshelf. Wednesday, November 19, 2014. Idiot America, Charles Pierce. The three Great Premises of Idiot America:. 183; Any theory is valid if it sells books, soaks up ratings, or otherwise moves units. 183; Anything can be true if someone says it loudly enough. 183; Fact is that which enough people believe. Truth is determined by how fervently they believe it. Is at once an invigorating history lesson, a cutting cultural critique, and a bullish appeal to our smarter selves.". The root of...

New World Ordinary: On Winter

http://newworldordinary.blogspot.com/2015/01/on-winter.html

After 28 years living in England and Wales I moved to America. So I'm charting my experience doing that. Nothing special; just an ordinary blog about being British and discovering the New World, like Sir Walter Raleigh would have done, if he had internet access and better pop-culture knowledge. Friday, January 16, 2015. Forget war and other people, to listen to the people of Minnesota, winter is hell. The French learnt it in 1812 when they invaded Russia, the Germans learnt it in 1941 when they. I also w...

It's All About The Song. The focus of this project is to shine a light on the craft of writing songs and the people who choose songwriting as a way of life. There's a lot of attention devoted to the singer of the song in our culture which in my belief is a celebration of the messenger, rather than what matters more: the message itself.
