Monday, November 24, 2014. Pier Park, Portland, Oregon. Text and photos by Phillip Oliver, Dirt Therapy. Friday, November 21, 2014. The Grotto, Portland, Oregon. Giant fir trees line a pathway that lead to the shrine at the grotto. The grotto itself is nestled into the base of a 110-ft. tall cliff. A chapel is located near the grotto. Services are held here and sometimes, on good weather days, they are held directly in front of the grotto. The grotto is carved into the base of a 110 ft. tall cliff. For a...

Tuesday, September 30, 2014. The covered bridges of Union County, Ohio. Here are a few photos of the covered bridges of Union County, Ohio. We had a day to ourselves and decided to tour the countryside after finding a brochure at our motel on these covered bridges in a nearby county. The bridges were all built in the late 1800s with the exception of a few. All were marked with plaques that explained the history and cost of the bridge and information about the men who built them. Dirt Therapy: June 2014

Wednesday, June 11, 2014. The Simpson/McKitrick garden - another spectacular Huntsville garden. The garden filled the entire property, the front, side and back of the house. This is the front as seen from the street. There was so much to see at every turn, not only plants but whimsical. Touches as well. Love the purple chair! I should have asked Tom how he keeps these ferns looking so good in sun? The back garden is lush with plantings, surrounding a firepit and water feature. An elevated. I hope to visi...

Thursday, July 9, 2015. Lilies in pots - "Muskadet". Lily "Muskadet" growing in a pot on the patio. I have found that lilies do quite well in pots and they even bloom in shady locations. It is wise to select varieties that do not get too tall - "Muskadet" is only about 2 feet tall. I have had this one for years. I just put it in our unheated basement during the winter where it goes dormant. Text and photos by Phillip Oliver, Dirt Therapy. Tuesday, July 7, 2015. Early morning wet garden. The lilies are be...

Friday, October 10, 2014. Waiting for the fall color. They are saying the same thing for this coming Monday but I am refusing to listen to them. Yesterday, I turned the sprinklers on in areas that needed it the most. Really the entire garden looks pretty pathetic. The garden wall area (above) was the only spot worth photographing. Also, the Hardy Orange ( Poncirus. Is covered with small fruit. Text and photos by Phillip Oliver, Dirt Therapy. Thursday, October 2, 2014. A memorial to war veterans was locat...

Dirt Therapy: Frozen Lemonade Pie
http://phillipoliver.blogspot.com/2015/07/frozen-lemonade-pie.html
Saturday, July 4, 2015. As much as we needed the rain, I was bummed out that it came on Friday and today. I had tons of work to do in the garden and got very little accomplished. Couldn't the rain have waited until tomorrow? I made Michael one of his all-time favorite desserts - Frozen Lemonade Pie. It is one of the easiest things in the world to make. We embellished it a few years ago and added more graham cracker crumbs. 3 Graham Cracker Crusts. 14 oz sweetened condensed milk (chilled). I like to think...

Dirt Therapy: August 2014

Monday, August 18, 2014. August blooms and foliage. There isn't a lot going on in the garden which is typical for August. We have had some relief from the humidity with some really nice days. Next week, however, promised to be a scorcher. The Sweet Autumn Clematis is beginning to bloom. It always blooms in August. Despite the fact that this vine is in almost complete shade, it does well.
