Selu, Corn Mother. Wednesday, August 06, 2008. When a hunter finds anything in the woods, such as a knife or a trinket, he must say, 'Little People, I would like to take this' because it may belong to them, and if he does not ask their permission they will throw stones at him as he goes home. Some Little People are black, some are white and some are golden like the Cherokee. Sometimes they speak in Cherokee, but at other times they speak their own 'Indian' language. Some call them "Brownies". Museum of t...

Selu, Corn Mother. Sunday, December 09, 2007. 8212; Weaving New Worlds: Southeastern Cherokee Women and Their Basketry, by Sarah H. Hill (University of North Carolina Press, 1997). The Cherokees were dye-masters. They could manipulate colors to obtain the exact shades they desired by the amount of pulp, the source of the pulp (root, bark, leaf, or husk), and the amount of time the splints were left in the boiling pot of water. Hill mentioned a number of dye sources used by the Cherokees, but in my experi...

Selu, Corn Mother. Saturday, August 04, 2007. Kanuchi is considered to be a real delicacy. The nuts are gathered in the fall and allowed to dry for a few weeks before the kanuchi making begins. It is a simple process, but that does not necessarily mean that is easy. The hickory nuts are cracked and the largest pieces of shell removed either by shaking the pieces through a loosely woven basket, or picking them out by hand. Serve kanuchi hot as soup. Info provided by various sources. Links to this post.

Selu, Corn Mother. Sunday, March 30, 2008. Let Cherokees decide who's Cherokee. The tribe's requirement that members must prove a blood connection isn't racist. By Heather Williams, HEATHER WILLIAMS is a Cherokee citizen and an Indian freedmen descendant. July 10, 2007. Can a tribe be both inclusive and have a by-blood requirement? My experience proves that it can, and I believe that Indians deserve the right to preserve our heritage through a direct connection to our ancestors. The non-Indians have a ri...

Selu, Corn Mother. Friday, November 28, 2008. With a little patience, some old-fangled equipment, and a lot of yarn,. Lucille Hair has become a living legend for Cherokee weavers. It's just before 11 am on a Thursday, and the Cherokee weavers are a little slow getting started. They're leaning back in their chairs, sipping at Mountain Dews, savoring the sunlight that pours through the tall, open windows that surround their spacious shop. A wood stove crackles away in a corner. Bill Ames, an instructor at ...
