From Victoria Day to Prince Alfred Day (October 19), the flagpole at the Arch flies the Canadian flag, the Nova Scotian flag and a pennant designed for the Tangier Gold Mines Historical Society. Felicia Murphy was the winner of a competition for the design of a pennant in the winter of 2008-9. Felicia’s design celebrates the history of Tangier:. The purple edge represents the visits of royalty. The miners’ picks represent the many miners who worked their claims in the 1860s.

The Tangier Gold Mines Historical Society was founded in 2000. Its first goal was the erect an arch to commemorate the 1861 visit of Prince Alfred. Since that time the Society has developed the Graeme Ferguson Memorial Park. In 2006 the Society published. Tangier: birth of a village. By William M. Bradley, now in its third printing. The Society sponsors an annual grant to a graduate of Duncan MacMillan High School in Sheet Harbour. The pennant of the Tangier Gold Mines Historical Society.
