Thursday, January 1, 2015. Fine Hair Moss ( Dicranella heteromalla. The winter garden reveals many secrets. The absence of green leafiness uncovers nests made in warmer times. From my kitchen window I view winter denizens, bird and squirrel, as they come out of shelter to visit the birdfeeder. Mosses stand out along the woodland path. I took a few strands inside and placed them in a saucer of water as an attempt to identify their species. Fine hair moss ( Dicranella heteromalla. Labels: fine hair moss.

Saturday, December 28, 2013. The wind rustles the trees and birds twitter from bare branches. Rake scrapes in a steady rhythm and pushes golden leaves into a rough and tumble pile. Blower makes its own wind. A deafening roar that coerces nature’s bounty to be tidied up and put out of the way. Using rake is wholesome exercise. Blower makes it all a chore. The fuel for rake is from burning calories. A human body is warmed in the cool crisp air, which has the sweet smell of fall. Blower burns fossil fuel.

Bird News From Nahanton Park and Other Musings. Sunday, May 31, 2015. Got to the park this morning around 8:00. It was 68 degrees and cloudy as it had rained earlier. Checked out the oriole nest for little Henry, but the parents must have been out looking for food, although I could hear some orioles calling to each other. A blue heron flew overhead. Some very large mourning doves perched together on a horizontal pole. Little babies was there. Her husband was nearby, but obviously not into child care.

I think a number of species stage here in post-breeding dispersal. There were a lot of Common Yellowthroats, Yellow-shafted Flickers, and Black-capped Chicadees.
