The Bead Lab: Vienna: Embroidered mantel and tapestry

http://www.thebeadlab.com/2014/07/vienna-embroidered-mantel-and-tapestry.html

Wednesday, July 09, 2014. Vienna: Embroidered mantel and tapestry. This is the Mantel of the Order of the Golden Fleece in the Schatzkammer in Vienna. The images are a combination of needle painting, primarily for the faces and hands of the figures, goldwork, and gold thread couched in colored silk. The density of the couching threads determines the darkness of the color. The formal name for this technique is Or Nue. I believe this piece was worked in the 15th century. Labels: At the Museum.

The Bead Lab: January 2015

http://www.thebeadlab.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 04, 2015. Tis the Season for Shiny Objects. It's that time of year again. Tip: If it's aqua, it's a Grandma project. I made earrings to match. I started playing around with some glass pearls and created a right-angle-weave base, then kept embellishing until it felt right. These Christmas projects are also excellent justification for my extensive bead stash. I wish there had been more sunlight, but it was a rather gloomy day. Links to this post. The Bead Lab: Ancient Egyptian Beadwork in Vienna

http://www.thebeadlab.com/2013/07/ancient-egyptian-beadwork-in-vienna.html

Monday, July 01, 2013. Ancient Egyptian Beadwork in Vienna. As a part of the teaching job, we took students on excursions to various cities other than Graz. We spent four days in Vienna, during which we visited a number of museums. At the Kunsthistorisches Museum, they had some nice examples of Ancient Egyptian beadwork. In addition to the supposedly brick stitch portions, there are remnants of beaded netting around the edges. As well as assorted necklaces and collections of beads. Labels: At the Museum.

The Bead Lab

Monday, August 03, 2015. This is my first bead embroidered necklace. I made it for a friend for her wedding. Due to the excitement of the event, I forgot to take proper pictures of it at the time. She took it out for me a few weeks ago to get some snapshots for my records. Unfortunately I didn't have the best lens or lighting available at the time, but I'm happy I have pictures of this piece now. Materials: Seed beads and Swarovski pearls and crystals. The base material is Lacy's Stiff Stuff. I started p...
