The Beer Bunker: Dark Side (Bath Ales)
http://thebeerbunker.blogspot.com/2014/04/dark-side-bath-ales.html
An armoured airlock window onto the world of bottled beer. Saturday, 19 April 2014. Dark Side (Bath Ales). This is an outstanding 4% ABV stout, increasingly cropping up on pub taps as a default dark, most recently so by the Loungers. In the bottle it pours cleanly and with a fine standard head. The notes on the nose are beautiful roasted barley, literally vacuuming the senses towards taking a sip. 8/10 - Wonderfully crafted session stout, skilfully executed. 22 April 2014 at 21:11. 13 July 2014 at 09:57.
The Beer Bunker: May 2015
http://thebeerbunker.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
An armoured airlock window onto the world of bottled beer. Friday, 22 May 2015. Treason West Coast IPA 5.8% (Uprising Brewery). The first beer from the Uprising brewery, part of the Windsor and Eton family it seems, standing on it's own feet but guided by their experience. The aroma to this beer is truly outstanding, like a can of Lilt it's huge on tropical fruity notes, and fresh as a daisy. 9/10 Smooth, balanced and full of huge tropical fruit. Thursday, 21 May 2015. Old Hoppy Hen 4.2% (Greene King).
The Beer Bunker: Maple Moon (Joseph Holt)
http://thebeerbunker.blogspot.com/2011/01/maple-moon-joseph-holt.html
An armoured airlock window onto the world of bottled beer. Monday, 24 January 2011. Maple Moon (Joseph Holt). Of Manchester is a family brewery, that has stayed in the same lineage for four generations. They brew three. Bottled beers, and Maple Moon is a 2005 IBA silver medal winner which has started appearing in Tesco and Sainsbury's of late. What's more, its moreish to the end of the glass, which for me shows they've hit the balance bullseye. The drink doesn't outstay its welcome, nor grow old in t...
The Beer Bunker: Bunker Rebooted
http://thebeerbunker.blogspot.com/2014/02/bunker-rebooted.html
An armoured airlock window onto the world of bottled beer. Tuesday, 4 February 2014. We've freshened things up with a bit of a sci-fi redesign of the Bunker, hope y'all like it. More reviewing fun soon as we tackle the world of beer in AD2014. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Rummage through the data banks. Fatally bad, nothing like ale. Barely drinkable unless drunk. Can be finished with gritted teeth. Lacks any proper character. Uninspiring but not unpleasant. A drink of fine repute, seek out and buy.
The Beer Bunker: Old Bob (Greene King)
http://thebeerbunker.blogspot.com/2011/01/old-bob-greene-king.html
An armoured airlock window onto the world of bottled beer. Friday, 5 July 2013. Old Bob (Greene King). I'm starting to get the suspicion that Greene King. Frets about its popularity amongst real ale drinkers. Here's another brand from the past, resurrected for a GK drink, much like the banner of Tolly Cobbold was for Phoenix. Old Bob is a "Strong Premium Ale", and at 5.1% abv they're not wrong about the clout. The alcohol carries gravitas throughout, and the final effect is a creamy, robust cold-weather ...

Sockster's Brewhouse: April 2013
http://cuddlybadger.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 30 April 2013. I am slowly working may way through the milk stout, and getting to like it. A touch more alcohol would have made this really tasty, but it is a good beer for a couple of pints supped slowly through the evening. The starter of SafAle 04 made sure that fermentation was well underway, after 7 hours of pitching.it also meant I saved half the pack of yeast for another brew soon! Posted by Paul Wright. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Beery stuff I read. Milkshake IPA: Mango Vanilla Hopsicle.
Sockster's Brewhouse: November 2013
http://cuddlybadger.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Sunday, 24 November 2013. Brewing a taste of autumn. Not a lot has happened since my last post. I seem to have been busy or ingredient less for months, and I am almost at a loss to remember my last post. Anyway, in between then and now, I continued on the tweaking of recipes and using of simple ingredients. Well, it was summer, and I wasn't looking for anything complex and heavy. So I settled on a really nice and simple pale ale. We've had one of the best autumns for fruit that I can remember. Blackb...
Sockster's Brewhouse: July 2013
http://cuddlybadger.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 31 July 2013. TMS 2013 tasting and a summer beer. It seems an awfully long times since I last blogged. I am now at the end of the TMS 2013 - an amalgam of English and Kiwi hops to celebrate the early season Test Series between England and NZ. It was an overwhelming victory for England. The addition of the mild malt over Maris Otter meant that this shifted from a crisp golden ale, to a dark golden, just a little sweet brew - what it really reminded me of was a pint of Banks's Mild from back home.
Sockster's Brewhouse: November 2012
http://cuddlybadger.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 14 November 2012. AG#10 - The Tasting. Well, here it is.in all its glory! This is the late-hopped Bluebird clone, fresh out the barrel. First impressions, this is rather too carbonated.I'm going to have to move the barrel to the shed, as sitting inside, even in the coldest room, is playing hell with the fittings. But a gentle swirl gets the aroma back. Of course, this was hopped with Challanger, so the hop hit is all spicy green hops, rather than the New World tropical fruits.
Sockster's Brewhouse: Christmas Crawl 2013 - Camden and Kentish Town
http://cuddlybadger.blogspot.com/2013/12/christmas-crawl-2013-camden-and-kentish.html
Saturday, 21 December 2013. Christmas Crawl 2013 - Camden and Kentish Town. Christmas. Time for tradition. You know the sort of thing; the same inane rituals, the same shit decorations you won't throw away, the same ranting at another year without a late night Marx Brothers' film to munch cheese and pickles to. Will the beer be ok? Can I get away with drinking in London without having to overstretch the mortgage? Can I get some decent nosebag for less than twenty quid for a plate of chips? In a larger map.
Sockster's Brewhouse: April 2015
http://cuddlybadger.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Sunday, 5 April 2015. AG#17 - Mild times again. At least in the new configuration of the downstairs there is something of a separate utility space, where I can store brewing stuff and brew without much hassle! No, not really, unless the fact that it's not bad is an improvement! Might try and beef this up to a richer, stronger mild next,. Boil Time: 70 min. Batch Size: 9.5 liters (fermentor volume). Boil Size: 18.5 liters. Boil Gravity: 1.024. Efficiency: 67% (brew house). Original Gravity: 1.036. Posted ...
Sockster's Brewhouse: AG #18 - Gone Kegging
http://cuddlybadger.blogspot.com/2015/10/ag-18-gone-kegging.html
Saturday, 10 October 2015. AG #18 - Gone Kegging. Been meaning to write this post for some time, but now that the temperatures are dropping, brewing is coming back onto the schedule. The eighteenth attempt at all grain brewing focused on two new techniques. Firstly, I ditched BIAB. I was getting hacked off with poor fermentation, driven by the lack of fermentable sugars rather than poor fermentation conditions. I wondered whether a proper sparge would give me better results. Original Gravity: 1.051.

Sockster's Brewhouse: AG #15: Blackberry Hefeweizen
http://cuddlybadger.blogspot.com/2013/12/ag-15-blackberry-hefeweizen.html
Sunday, 15 December 2013. AG #15: Blackberry Hefeweizen. Elsewhere on this blog, I have posted the recipe for this. The yeast, after being a bit slow, really kicked into action, and then stopped in a cold snap. THE FG was still rather high, so I roused and put it in somewhere warm. Nice bit of krausen, and then stopped again. My final gravity is still really too high (by about a full tenth of a point! Given that I have experienced this phenomenon more than once, with different yeasts, suggests that it mu...

June 12, 2013. Monkey Fist IPA from Shipyard Brewing. Shipyard Brewing Company: Monkey Fist IPA. The name piqued my curiosity, so I checked the Shipyard Brewing Company website ( www.shipyard.com. For information. Monkey Fist IPA is so named because it is “edgy, aggressive and explosive.”. But be careful: this brew packs a bit of a wallop with a 6.9% ABV! Don’t be afraid to pair this brew with spicy, hearty foods- or just enjoy that classic IPA taste by itself! Posted by BeerBuzz.info. I was expecting a ...
