November 30, 2010. After the Nat Turner rebellion, many states enacted harsh anti-literacy laws and laws against assembly. However, the revolts in Demerara and the Baptist War didn’t have as harsh a backlash against abolitionism. As Davis writes, this restraint greatly aided the abolition movement in Britain, which would have surely suffered a setback if Jamaican blacks had followed the example of Haiti and had massacred hundreds of whites.
