Saturday, February 28, 2009. 2 weeks, one backpack. We’re packing everything we need for two weeks into one backpack. Monday at 6.30am we’re meeting at the bus station to make the 11 hour trip to Nicaragua. I’m excited and nervous all at once, but I think the excitement outweighs everything else. I don’t think this trip could have come at a better time. Orange juice and the 80's. A lot of times on the buses in between Spanish songs there will be a song in English from the 80’s. It’s so ri...I you haven&#...

Wednesday, July 29, 2009. This weekend I had some of my highschool small group girls from Upland come and visit. It was great to see them and see them experience a bit of Chicago—we ate at Giordano’s, went along the lake front, Navy Pier, Millennium Park, and the absurdity known as Macy’s. How in the world is this going to work out? Sunday, July 19, 2009. No, I’m not talking about the words. It is as if we are minimalizing their experience. It can easily come across as. All the while this may be the worl...

Sunday, April 25, 2010. I was talking with a friend this weekend while sitting in a butterfly pavilion. As we marveled at the butterflies dancing about, he mentioned a poem that he had recently read. It was Katerina Stoykova-Klemer's How to Write a Poem, which simply reads “Catch the air around the butterfly.”. Since that conversation I have been pondering what other parts of life are too delicate, too frail to touch. What things are we limited to trying to catch the air around it? Sunday, April 4, 2010.
