Art and nature at the old low light. The Old Low Light. Opened its doors to the public in March 2015. Sited adjacent to North Shields Fish Quay the building is at the centre of Clifford’s Fort, a 16th century fortification protecting the mouth of the River Tyne. The present 18th century building originally acted as a beacon to help ships navigate the treacherous river mouth and served various other functions over the years until it was rescued from near ruinous state in 2010.
