The Brooding Hen

Wednesday, January 15, 2014. We have been watching a beehive for months. It is a classic storybook hole-in-a-tree type, and we have often stayed to watch the bees coming and going. Some days they are frantic and some days they are lazy. Today we were lucky enough to see our favorite hive on the move, as the colony divided and a large number swarmed off to form a new hive. Here is our gorgeous swarm (you can click on the picture to enlarge it):. We wonder where they will move to next! I just looked throug...

The Brooding Hen: November 2013

http://thebroodinghen.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

Saturday, November 30, 2013. You can build a magnificent little toy tree house like this with just a few small logs, glue, and a saw:. A few years ago, I found some good, dry fruit wood, and after borrowing a mitre saw, I cut it into lots of little medallions that were 3/4" thick and about 3-6" in diameter. After an hour of cutting, I had buckets of these little wooden rounds. I did not wax or polish them, just set them out for play and they made lovely free toys. Parts or all of this set move from table...

The Brooding Hen: October 2012

http://thebroodinghen.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Monday, October 8, 2012. 2 Gallons and a Half Pint. Me: I've gotta' stop in this gas station and put five bucks in the tank. Me: The gas tank. Julio: Why do you have to put five bucks in the tank? Me: 'Cause we're almost out of gas and I want to make it home for naps. Julio: And if you don't put in five bucks then we won't make it to home? Julio: But why do you have to put money. Julio: Are you going to use five dollars? Me: Probably ten. Actually, I'm going to use my debit card. Who IS this chick?

Monday, March 4, 2013. I was driving down the road, having one of my usual conversations with my three year old, when this great old Woody Guthrie song came on:. As far as I can tell, this song is all about three year olds. And, as I'm sure you can imagine, these old lyrics inspired a barrage of new questions! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Who IS this chick? Collage of Dreams: Fire safety and fun activities related to firefighters

http://www.collageofdreams.com/2013/10/fire-safety-and-fun-activities-related.html

Wednesday, October 16, 2013. Fire safety and fun activities related to firefighters. As I mentioned my son loves everything firefighters, so I had planned a firefighter themed birthday party for his 3. Birthday. I made this inexpensive and easy to make 15 feet long fire truck with poster board, paper plates, shoe boxes and some masking tape. We used a garden hose as a stand-in to fire hose. Hope you have lot of fun playing with your little firefighters. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

The Re Club: December 2011

http://thereclub.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

We remarkably recycle, reuse, refurbish, rethink and renew. Sunday, December 4, 2011. Stamped Salt Dough Ornaments. Here is a variation on the salt-dough ornament tutorial I did for Katy Elliott last year. For full instructions on making and cooking the dough, refer to that). I stamped these with ink after I rolled them out and before I baked them, using stamps and regular old stamp ink. A stamp pad with dry ink won't bleed. Using a light hand when inking also helps. I also made some using my favorite tr...

Berlin again: July 2012

http://berlin-again.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

July 26, 2012. Evening walk trough MacArthur Park, L.A. Stepping out of the subway station, the park lay ahead of us, glowing in the dark. The lights of the city cast a magical light on the lake in the middle of the park. During the day, you can see the trash littered throughout the park. But at night, everything becomes beautiful. It was early evening, and the playground was filled with kids. Back on 6th street, we were walking back to our house on the hill. July 17, 2012. But not all of them. Back in 1...

Berlin again: Nalu Diner, Berlin

http://berlin-again.blogspot.com/2013/01/nalu-diner-berlin.html

January 9, 2013. Nalu Diner, Berlin. We were hungry for some fluffy pancakes drizzled with maple syrup, crispy strips of bacon, and one or two cups of down-to-earth filtered coffee. So we headed to Nalu, an American diner on Dunckerstraße, and we were looking forward to its simplicity and straightforwardness: No James Dean posters on the wall, no Marilyn Monroe pics, no red leather booths, no maps of Route 66. Or like my (American) husband loves to say: It doesn't try to be a diner. It just is. I keep he...

Berlin again: Brot und Oel

http://berlin-again.blogspot.com/2012/11/brot-und-oel.html

November 16, 2012. It was a dreary afternoon, the coldest day since we have been back in Berlin. We were walking down Gneisenaustrasse and a first real hint of winter was in the air, swallowing the tip of the blackened church at Südstern. The window of the bakery started to get foggy and we felt warm again. We bought a walnut plum bread for supper and learned that this bakery has been in Berlin for 5 years now - they must have opened just when we were moving away. Now we are back, and I am planni...After...

Berlin again: il Giradschi

http://berlin-again.blogspot.com/2012/12/il-giradschi.html

December 20, 2012. The food was good. Although the red wine was a bit chilly, the brick-oven pizzas with their paper-thin crust are as as crunchy as it gets in this corner of Prenzlauer Berg. And large - the plates are are too small for these pizzas, which are generously topped with a forest of arugula and crunchy slivers of walnuts, and served with a spicy oil that will make your lips burn. Still, next time I will make my way down to I Due Forni again. Oderberger Str. 22, 10435 Berlin. A CUP OF JO.

Berlin again: October 2012

http://berlin-again.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

October 29, 2012. I am writing so much in my head, especially when I am on my bike, but it has been difficult to sit down, to write down. How to begin? We have been in Berlin for over a month now, from September to October, and so much has happened: We started Kita, we got sick, we ran to many different Ä. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). After living in Los Angeles for 5 years, I have come back to Berlin with my family; post by post, I am chronicling all my favorite Berlin places old and new. A CUP OF JO.

Monday, August 13, 2012. My daughter has wanted to paint the walls in her room for years. Every birthday.every holiday.the only gift she ever requests is that her room get painted. For some parents that may be the perfect solution to the infamous, "what-do-we-get-her? I don't know why I have such an aversion to projects of any sort. I just.I don't know. Am I really that. Afraid of making a mistake? Do I run from things that require my total concentration? Why must I analyze everything? As in, there has.
