Although this area it is well protected by hedges it catches the wind blowing from the Black Mountains. We know from experience not to plant anything too close to the hedges and this influenced the structure of this garden. We keep changing our ideas about what to grow, being undecided what would be most worthwhile. What we will now do here is dependent on how we change the garden to suit our maturity!

These are a new addition, replacing what was previously a bonfire area – we have a lot of shrub and hedge trimmings and a decision on how to deal with them has tended to preoccupy us. There are six varieties of quince, which are underplanted with nepeta and allium and camassia bulbs for the spring. We’ve had to drastically reduce bushes and holly trees on the field side of the garden, which has presented some wind problems, which we will resolve by erecting a 6ft windbreak and a new hedge. These make a windbreak for the small group of cherry trees on the right.
