Rhubarb-Grapefruit Marmalade | the moveable feasts

https://themoveablefeasts.wordpress.com/2012/04/19/rhubarb-grapefruit-marmalade

I must admit, I honestly and truly don’t even know what rhubarb really tastes like. Yes, I’ve had my fair share of strawberry-rhubarb crumbles, or the rhubarb-raspberry flavor cousin in the form of a jamy crostata. Or a big crumb coffee cake. I know its a little bitter and even a bit sour, from the bites I get of it of said rhubarb-raspberry-or-strawberry treats. I always like whatever it’s in, including this jam here. But in terms of what its flavor actually is, I’ve no idea. I made some of this bread.

The foreign and familiar (the pendulum’s swinging back) | the moveable feasts

https://themoveablefeasts.wordpress.com/2015/02/16/the-foreign-and-familiar-the-pendulums-swinging-back

The foreign and familiar (the pendulum’s swinging back). Last weekend I was laying on a bench in the park, listening to the radio in the sun, and this song. New music must be found! New experiences will get tied to them and then those random songs may (if they’re lucky) become sacred and special! Then I hear this. Simon and Garfunkel song or this. You want to eat a new dish in a new place with people you just met until all you want is that meal your mom served you, that one you could recognize anywhere.

Thick and Chewy Oatmeal Cookies & some more California | the moveable feasts

https://themoveablefeasts.wordpress.com/2013/06/29/chewy-thick-classic-oatmeal-cookies

Thick and Chewy Oatmeal Cookies and some more California. I didn’t mean to wait a whole week and then some to follow-up a post. That announced I’d be living in France for the next year. Thing is, to be able to formally apply for my visa, I had to trek all the way to San Francisco to apply in person at the nearest French Consulate to me. I know! Quite the inconvenience. But my mom and I made the most of it, planning something of a little road trip down to the Bay Area. Pictures of some pretty damn miserab...

Lately, warm french lentils, potato scones, fall | the moveable feasts

https://themoveablefeasts.wordpress.com/2014/10/27/lately-warm-french-lentils-potato-scones-fall

Lately, warm french lentils, potato scones, fall. Yesterday morning as I was waiting for my bus at its stop at 8:24, ready to head into work, I felt the cold and fog nip around me (and that’s what it does, nip, like a bite) and I had my headphones in and I was listening to this. Song, and I thought, “oh boy it’s happened, this is when it all starts mattering, part II of the year is here.”. I do have to say though, I’ve been looking forward to it ( second time. Moving on to Peasant Food Highlight #2: I ma...

Chocolate Crinkle Cookies | the moveable feasts

https://themoveablefeasts.wordpress.com/2011/12/13/chocolate-crinkle-cookies

These cookies almost came with a cute story, but alas, they didn’t. But just to humor you, here’s the second-rate story:. When I see the familiar half-cursive half-print words smoothly written out I just think,. Ooph, there’s a mom.). Cookbook. Should I feel a little guilty here? It’s hard to stomp over a hand-written recipe trusted to you and you specifically in order to bring back memories of happy times and delicious cookies. But you know what? Adapted from Williams-Sonoma’s. 1/4 cup (1/2 stick or 60g...

In the kitchen, etc.: December 2011

http://inthekitchenetc.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

In the kitchen, etc. A blog about life, in the kitchen and out. Wednesday, December 7, 2011. Ode to Mom's Cooking, by Sam. You set before me this plate of food. And I stare and poke and search for something good. To stick my fork into, but instead find. That you must have left all the tasty stuff behind. Because you know I won't eat these things that are green. And pasta with sauce or meat or cheese - when have you seen. Me accept anything but stark naked noodles? I know I used. To eat tofu and was.

In the kitchen, etc.: Pizza!

http://inthekitchenetc.blogspot.com/2012/02/pizza.html

In the kitchen, etc. A blog about life, in the kitchen and out. Thursday, February 23, 2012. I have made my fair share of pizza, using store-bought doughs as well as a variety of homemade ones. I had recipes I liked, but not one was truly great. Until now! The source of the great dough was most unlikely: Earth to Table. And this topping. I brushed the dough with olive oil, then spread mashed delicata squash, sprinkled rosemary and cheese, and tore prosciutto on top. Wonderful! From Earth to Table. Turn t...

In the kitchen, etc.: Bless the Swedes

http://inthekitchenetc.blogspot.com/2012/04/bless-swedes.html

In the kitchen, etc. A blog about life, in the kitchen and out. Wednesday, April 11, 2012. Someone has been keeping the one copy of Kitchen of Light. For-ev-er. I have been #4 on the library waiting list for, like, ev-er. There is a nifty feature on the library website that allows a patron to "browse the shelf." Since I was going to have to put off my Scandinavian cooking agenda for a while, I browsed and happened upon Sweet and Savory Swedish Baking. I would only rate this book overall as okay. What I l...

In the kitchen, etc.: November 2011

http://inthekitchenetc.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

In the kitchen, etc. A blog about life, in the kitchen and out. Thursday, November 3, 2011. There was one day last week when all my meals were shaped like wedges. I had leftover pizza, erbazzone, and fennel-leek tart. Funny. We were not supposed to order pizza, but we had to because, although I had been in and out of the kitchen for five hours. If I had left the comma out of that sentence, it would have sounded like I make cannibal pizza. Saute people! The broth is made by browning the chicken and the ve...

In the kitchen, etc. A blog about life, in the kitchen and out. Tuesday, January 22, 2013. Paella Como Dios Manda. I suppose paella is a casserole. I was just thinking that "paella" is the name of the pan whence the dish gets its name, much like the "casserole." But, really, casserole is American English for paella. How 'bout that? Cooking with Natural Foods. Favorite Fats and Oils. Brown Sugar Rosemary Walnuts Recipe. September 19, 2011. 124; 142 Comments. My journey to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia started with crickets chirping from my cellphone alarm at 4:50 am Getting up that early hurts, but it gave me enough time to catch flights to Roanoke, Virginia via Detroit, and then catch a 90-minute shuttle to The Greenbrier. http://inthekitchenetc.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

In the kitchen, etc. A blog about life, in the kitchen and out. Friday, March 23, 2012. Funny, though, because I recently saw an episode of America's Test Kitchen and they used the word "chewy" as a slur when describing an oatmeal scone. Ah well. I like it. The chocolate beauty with the scone here is my version of a Bixit. I have been searching and searching for a Bixit approximate here in the States. J and I discovered or, rather, were introduced to these cookies in Norway (skoal! 2 cups whole wheat four.

Fresh ginger and buttermilk cake with poached rhubarb. I had a vision of this when I first read this. Post with fresh ginger cake and poached rhubarb a few years ago, and have every spring since then hoped to get my act together enough to actually follow through with it all. Well, Spring 2015, you’re looking like the one. Spring 2015 is also the one, coincidentally (or …not? Where I finally buy flowers for my place. Look at me! Side note: Isn’t that dead flower in the bunch of pretty blooming photos.
