Travels and Teaching in South Korea. Still life with kimchi. Laquo; Food for thought. Emptiness is form, form is emptiness. Can rock ‘n’ roll save your soul? February 26, 2010 by paulmonson. Today I have my first Thai Massage client in Korea coming to my place. It’s been a bit dusty on the 7th floor of my apartment building, so I decided to clean up a little bit. In the past, I listened to this song and said to myself: yeah man, he’s got it. I am pissed off, and I am stuck with that feeling. You are comm...

The other night the culture shock set in. Moving to a foreign country, not knowing anyone, not speaking the language or even being able to read the script. I thought to myself, what I am doing here away from all the things that are familiar to me? Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here.

Travels and Teaching in South Korea. Still life with kimchi. Laquo; Thai Massage Retreat. March 20, 2010 by paulmonson. After an hour filled with cheap Korean beers, a couple more guys showed up. One was tall, blond, and named Jacob. While the three of us already there worked at hagwons, or cram-schools, Jacob had a job at a a government funded after-school institute. An enviable job, to be sure. A week later, though, I got paid and had a plenty supply of what the French call liquide — cash money&#...

Travels and Teaching in South Korea. Still life with kimchi. February 25, 2010 by paulmonson. Yesterday I had a yummy lunch with two of my co-workers, Johnny and Laurel. The school cafeteria was serving chicken nuggets and so they invited me to find something more delicious and less fried. It was raining lightly but the walk was short to the little neighborhood cafe. There were only 2 other businessmen, dressed in suits, eating when we arrived, though the place filled up by the time we left. It’s h...

on listening to Murakami | Travels and Teaching in South Korea

Travels and Teaching in South Korea. Still life with kimchi. Laquo; 2 weeks into teaching. Opening a Bank Account in Korea. On listening to Murakami. March 8, 2010 by paulmonson. Haruki Murakami is one of my favorite authors. I have not read anything by him for some time now. I began listening to Kafka on the Shore yesterday evening. Returning to this writer is like greeting a friend who I haven’t seen in some time. Yet, it has a different quality of intimacy in the audio format. More on Murakami to come.

Travels and Teaching in South Korea. Still life with kimchi. Laquo; Emptiness is form, form is emptiness. On listening to Murakami. 2 weeks into teaching. March 7, 2010 by paulmonson. Week 3 of South Korea. I am facing my first full week of teaching with excitement. The first week I was here, I observed 20 hours of classes at my hagwon in Sanbon. The observation hours went from interesting early in the week, to tedious at the end. 8220;What did you notice about the lesson? 8220;What did you teach? 8220;W...

Travels and Teaching in South Korea. Still life with kimchi. Laquo; on listening to Murakami. Opening a Bank Account in Korea. March 9, 2010 by paulmonson. Today I left my apartment in downtown Sanbon at a little past eight. It was earlier than usual because I had to open a bank account at a KB near my hagwon. I’ve been wearing Chacos for the last few days because I noticed that my sneakers have been scrunching up my pinkie toes. Note to self: need to find some new sneakers. If it hadn’t been for m...
