50 acres in Western Oregon. The family farm, passed down to us, The Reluctant Homesteaders. Time to get busy. Saturday, January 3, 2015. Reluctant Homesteaders Top Ten Tools For Homesteading. Sometimes, as I walk up and down the hill, up and down the hill, I think about the things I use to get things done here at the Homestead. One of the benefits of blogging is that I get to really pin down my thoughts on a subject, so what better subject to do this with than:. Broadband Internet with WiFi amplifier.

50 acres in Western Oregon. The family farm, passed down to us, The Reluctant Homesteaders. Time to get busy. Tuesday, November 25, 2014. What in The World Have We Been Up To? It's been a few weeks since a post and don't think it hasn't been on my list, but man, unless I can clone myself, posts are going to be a little thin for a while. We have been so busy. Children moving, friends in the hospital, Halloween (in this family, it is a HUGE production). I like the "Copper Penny" a lot. I am reluctant to bl...

The Reluctant Homesteaders: March 2015

50 acres in Western Oregon. The family farm, passed down to us, The Reluctant Homesteaders. Time to get busy. Wednesday, March 25, 2015. You might remember that last June I hatched dark eggs from my Cuckoo Marans hens, in a very temperamental incubator. My goal was to increase the occurrence of extra dark eggs from my flock. I hadn't been to the auction in a couple of years and had forgotten what fun it can be. Dad came along and kept me company. And helped to catch the rooster that escaped. I received a...

The Reluctant Homesteaders: August 2014

http://thereluctanthomesteaders.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

50 acres in Western Oregon. The family farm, passed down to us, The Reluctant Homesteaders. Time to get busy. Sunday, August 17, 2014. 21 days is all it takes to make yourself a batch of chicks! Well 21 days of constantly messing with the temperature and humidity of a very temperamental and inexpensive incubator which was poorly situated in an uninsulated building just as a storm front came in. In the end I had 19 hatch out of 30 eggs. Not fantastic, but not bad either. All were healthy and fit. Of chick...

Kitchen progress | Farm Folly

http://farmfolly.com/2015/04/kitchen-progress

Tasty garlic in my belly →. April 1, 2015. Work has been steady over here and projects are starting to get close to wrapping up. The kitchen is nearly complete. The counter tops and window sills were installed last Friday. They are Silestone composite quartz. The pulls and knobs were attached on Saturday. I have no idea why our builder was there on a Saturday. The tile back splash was installed Tuesday. We went with “liquid marble” subway tiles to continue the monotone theme for the kitchen. I’ve g...

bakermom – la petite kitchen

https://lapetitekitchen.wordpress.com/author/bakermom

Cooking, baking, whimsy and perspective, from an itty-bitty kitchen. That title is kind of loosie-goosie. Its more like cream cheese Cool Whip pie with a bit of strawberry. It’s like the one I remember grandma making way back in the day, only last time I tried to remake it, I didn’t use any strawberries. I found an old recipe of hers that was just cream cheese pie, with Cool Whip and sour cream. Its kind of like what I put in the strawberry cream trifle of excellence. And no pound cake. Mores the pity.

Cooking, baking, whimsy and perspective, from an itty-bitty kitchen. Lazy Mans Lasagne (Or Sam Spade Lasagne). Here is an old post I thought worth regurgitating to you. I want to make this again and needed a refresher. But it all brings back “The Maltese Falcon”. Do you ever associate movies with foods? I told my son that I was making Lazy Mans lasagna. 8221; He was offended. 8220;No, the one. It is lazy, not the ones. It” Although I could make a case…nevermind. Lets get a closer look, shall we? Simmered Chinese Chicken – la petite kitchen

Cooking, baking, whimsy and perspective, from an itty-bitty kitchen. And here I thought I had already added all our old family favorite recipes to my blog and would stop now. Tsk, tsk. We cannot forget this one! I have had it for years. It is easy and goes perfectly with perfect brown rice. Since it is a stove top recipe, it is handy to have when the oven is otherwise occupied. (I am trying another stab at gluten free bread). So here is the Simmered Chinese Chicken. 1 whole chicken cut into pieces. Just ...

What?? Dried beet greens? – la petite kitchen

https://lapetitekitchen.wordpress.com/2015/05/07/what-dried-beet-greens

Cooking, baking, whimsy and perspective, from an itty-bitty kitchen. It’s spring, time to plant those beets. Or time to hit up the farmers markets and let them do all the work. Here was my moms garden 2 years ago, bless her. That is where I discovered wonderful beet green chips. So this is a re-post to remind you how to do it.). I have to admit, I am not much of a fan of greens. I like wilted spinach salad. And give me any greens in a nice tossed salad. My mom loves beets. Yee-um! Well, she did it. T...

http://homesteaderbees.blogspot.com/2012/03/there-alive-and-buzzing.html

Tuesday, March 13, 2012. The're Alive and Buzzing! Can I have more please? We have been having another crazy spring here in the Willamette Valley, a week of glorious 60 degree sunshine and then last night I noticed a white sheen outside the window. Two inches of snow out of the blue. Luckily they have manged their affairs wisely and seem to be doing fine. I had left the jar of syrup under hive #2 thinking they might be able to get out now and then to drink from it. Some sources say that outside syrup wil...

Sunday, August 4, 2013. How Bee Proof is Bee Proof? The Strengths and Limitations of a Good Bee Suit. This is a post that I put on Reluctant Homesteaders. But I thought it would be good to have here also. Being Spring, we have had a lot of interest in my post on the Ultra Breeze Bee Suit. I have been pondering what I would say in a review of the suit for 3 or 4 weeks, and I have changed my mind several times on what exactly I have to say about the suit. Hopefully mine will be long. Being allergic to bees...

Gay marriage, gluttony, and why none of it matters

Gay marriage, gluttony, and why none of it matters. June 29, 2015. Until I was 20, I was absolutely certain that if a church only sung hymns and only lasted for an hour that its members were practicing a dead religion. How could they know God if they didn’t clap? Or raise their hands in worship? Stoic worship was not, in fact, worship – how could it be? Wasn’t it David who said that he would be even more undignified than this in regards to his exuberant celebration in worship? Gouge your eye out. If it&#...
