One gardener’s quest to get to the bottom of it all. My Alter-Ego February 25, 2009. 8212; Kate @ 3:07 pm. This is where I out myself as a (hopeful) gardening profiteer, and also reveal where most of my energy has been focussed this winter (when not on my fam, cheesy ghost-hunting TV shows, and translating work). Growing Again | The Root

One gardener’s quest to get to the bottom of it all. Growing Again December 16, 2008. Filed under: Container Gardening. 8212; Kate @ 11:31 pm. Salad on a sill. This weekend I pulled out the dirt and the seeds and I started some lettuce, arugula, chard, spinach. It was very rewarding to have a tiny helper who was all too willing to get her hands dirty with the project. And it was wonderful to smell soil again. This is all it takes. I am already imagining a pea plant on the windowsill, sending tendrils...

rake shovel hoe: fall garden '09

http://rakeshovelhoe.blogspot.com/2009/07/fall-garden-09.html

This year, thanks to teresa (or her husband? I am getting the fall garden started early. we are moving to a different house on august first, and were told that we can start gardening there any time. since it is just across the street from our place, i have taken advantage of that offer. Yesterday, with some rare time to myself, i cut a path in the new garden space, and planted beets, lettuce, bush beans, basil, cilantro and peas. hopefully i can find some broccoli plants at the farmer's market, and m...

rake shovel hoe: September 2008

http://rakeshovelhoe.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Cold frame construction is as complicated as you make it. my plans simplified once i realized that the purpose is to warm the soil and block wind. i was wondering if i needed to bury the sides into the earth, and if so, how far? For more on that). I've been covering the broccoli and kale with floating row cover, to keep the cabbage moths from laying eggs on them. i had been pulling dozens of those green cabbage worms off of the half eaten leaves, every time i took a look at them. my summer kale w...Crazy...

rake shovel hoe: May 2009

http://rakeshovelhoe.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

A few weeks ago, i saw someone at the farmer's market selling sweet annie. Seedlings. they looked just like those mysterious plants on my porch. then, i put it all together: i had hung the dried sweet annie. That shawn and denise gave us last year, out on our porch light. It had been inside all winter, but had lost its fragrance, and was beginning to annoy me. i hung it outside in the early spring. the seeds had blown down, into that pot, and sprouted. voila! rake shovel hoe: June 2009

http://rakeshovelhoe.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

As soon as i finish writing this, i'll need to up-date again immediately, with fresh photos. these are so. We have had so much rain and warm weather, that the plants are growing inches every day, right before our eyes! First off, let me say that this is the year of the lettuce! Our lettuce, all 4 varieties, did remarkably well this spring, and we still have some that has not quite bolted. We had heads,. Of buttercruch, and a variety of romaine (i guess. Skimpy pea harvest to lack of proper sun. still...

rake shovel hoe: fancy

http://rakeshovelhoe.blogspot.com/2009/08/fancy.html

You may recall me waxing poetic about the humble husk cherry. I planted them, they grew, we have been harvesting the fruit all summer, and they just keep coming! Cosmo loves them, and enjoys hunting for them on the ground under the plants. he leaves of pile of "wrappers" around the garden bed. Our favorite thing to do with them is to dip them in chocolate. Ive never heard of them before. Ill have to show dh. We love checking out new crops. August 20, 2009 at 10:49 AM. You know whats funny?

rake shovel hoe: November 2008

http://rakeshovelhoe.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Just as compost bin #2 is filled to capacity, compost bin #1 is ready to begin again. We "harvested" our first batch of compost! We started bin #1 about a year ago, and this week, we scooped it out, and spread it on some garden beds (i learned from carol. That the best time to prepare spring beds, is in the fall). the compost is probably not completely. We also dug into our leaf mold compost pile, and that stuff is delicious. No, i didn't taste it.)! rake shovel hoe: October 2008

http://rakeshovelhoe.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

First frost is upon us (it happened last night), a full 7 days past the official predicted date of october 20. i grabbed these zinnias and cosmos for a final bouquet, and brought the container plants inside. i'll try to get the garlic planted today. As a consolation prize, we get to look at this beautiful thing from our back porch:. Links to this post. Anybody else out there doing some fall/winter gardening? Links to this post. rake shovel hoe: flower power

http://rakeshovelhoe.blogspot.com/2009/08/flower-power.html

Considering that flowers aren't really the focus of my gardening efforts (i'm all about the food, ya'll), i do have a few scattered about the yard(s), and can't help photographing them! I love all the bees and butterflies they attract, and appreciate the splashes of color from spring to late fall. feast your eyes upon all of this summer color. Cosmo between the edamame and the black-eyed susans. My zinnia circle (in our old yard). A small poppy, in my mixed flower bed (old place). Two varieties of cosmos.

Carrots and Kids: July 2008

http://carrotsandkids.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

Monday, 28 July 2008. School Club Harvest (or the Miraculous Never Watered But Still Grew Plants). Usually when Monday approaches I start thinking about the school gardening club. Actually, that's a bit of a lie. I used. To start thinking about the club and what activities we would be doing on Tuesday. Towards the end of term however, my enthusiasm had started to wane and quite often I wouldn't think about this until Tuesday morning. To put goodness knows where) and the bulbs. Definitely the children's e...
