33 and 1/3 Revolutions Per Minute: Harry Nilsson, Nilsson Schmilsson (1971)
http://thirtythreeandathirdrpm.blogspot.com/2011/05/harry-nilsson-nilsson-schmilsson-1971.html
Harry Nilsson, Nilsson Schmilsson. For some he’s the “wha-wha” guy from Midnight Cowboy. To which he contributed “Everybody’s Talkin’”). For others the name Harry Nilsson evokes “Me and My Arrow” and that funny cartoon about a land of pointy-headed people. Still others recall how the Beatles once dubbed him their favorite American performer. Can’t recommend Nilsson Schmilsson. Enough. Kind of funny to think Nilsson would give his best album such a self-effacing name. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
33 and 1/3 Revolutions Per Minute: Hoodoo Gurus, Mars Needs Guitars! (1985)
http://thirtythreeandathirdrpm.blogspot.com/2012/07/hoodoo-gurus-mars-needs-guitars-1985.html
Hoodoo Gurus, Mars Needs Guitars! The Australian quartet Hoodoo Gurus formed in 1981 and three years later produced a terrific first LP, Stoneage Romeos. That introduced its throwback power pop to an international audience. The 1985 follow-up Mars Needs Guitars! Builds on that debut with a stirring sequence of studied garage rock. Finally comes “She,” a haunting closer sung by a captive lover. “I was captured, / Bound, enraptured, / Kneeling at her feet,” he explains. R...The album’s closer migh...
33 and 1/3 Revolutions Per Minute: Klaatu, Klaatu (1976)
http://thirtythreeandathirdrpm.blogspot.com/2010/10/klaatu-klaatu-1976.html
Klaatu is best-known as the band rumored to have been a secret mid-1970s revival of the Beatles. That notion first began shortly after the release of their first album, a self-titled debut landing on Earth seemingly out of nowhere in the late summer of 1976. Musically with that syrupy-sweet mellotron pushing things along. (In other words, it isn’t that. 8221; near the end that could not sound more like Paul McCartney. (Seriously - it’s uncanny.) The weird, potentially off-putting “Anu...Side One ends wit...
33 and 1/3 Revolutions Per Minute: Peter Gabriel, Peter Gabriel (1980)
http://thirtythreeandathirdrpm.blogspot.com/2010/09/peter-gabriel-peter-gabriel-1980.html
Peter Gabriel, Peter Gabriel. As most know, well before he sledgehammered his way to pop stardom via MTV in the mid-80s, Peter Gabriel spent the late 60s and early 70s fronting the U.K. band Genesis during its formative prog-rock years. Side Two opens with the quirky “Games Without Frontiers,” also prominently featuring Bush on backing vocals. The highly original, anti-war track marches along in a military-like fashion, the association encouraged further by some Bridge Over the River Kwai. Type whistling...
33 and 1/3 Revolutions Per Minute: Can, Ege Bamyasi (1972)
http://thirtythreeandathirdrpm.blogspot.com/2010/08/can-ege-bamyasi-1972.html
Can, Ege Bamyasi. Is the fourth album by Krautrock pioneers Can, first released in 1972. This is the one with the picture of a can of okra on the cover - a playful reference to the band’s name. Although I also dig Can’s earlier, more obviously avant-garde or “psychedelic” LPs, I tend to play those less frequently than Ege Bamyasi. And other so-called “classic”-era discs, records which on the whole are comparatively less noisy and a bit more focused sounding. The next track, “Sing Swan Song,” ...The track...

Hard-Boiled Poker: Poker and the Debates -- Existentialist musings of an online poker player
http://hardboiledpoker.blogspot.com/2015/08/poker-and-debates.html
Existentialist musings from Short-Stacked Shamus,. An online poker player of (primarily) micro and low limits. Thursday, August 06, 2015. Poker and the Debates. I’ve been pretty immersed in presidential campaigns this summer. I’m not talking about the ones for 2016. Rather, the ones from 1960, 1968, and 1972. That’s because I’m continuing to prepare for a class I’ll be teaching in the fall, kind of an offshoot from the Poker in American Film and Culture one that I taught (and have written about here.
Hard-Boiled Poker: Lou Krieger (1945-2012) -- Existentialist musings of an online poker player

Existentialist musings from Short-Stacked Shamus,. An online poker player of (primarily) micro and low limits. Tuesday, December 04, 2012. Late last night the family of Lou Krieger posted a note to his Facebook page relating the news of his passing. Many of us who were friends of Lou knew he’d been diagnosed with cancer, and he had kept us all in the loop regarding his treatments ever since. So while I suppose we weren’t altogether unprepared, it was still a shock for a couple of reasons. I continued lis...

There’s a new thread on 2 2. Decrying the level of play at the conclusion of the 1987 WSOP Main Event as evidenced by 43-minute video of the final table you can watch on YouTube. Also interesting, both John Duthie and Vicky Coren are shown playing hands in the episode, yet neither are identified. In fact, Coren is sitting next ...

Did a double-take earlier today while making a cursory check of my banking account online. Hard-Boiled Poker: Still the Same -- Existentialist musings of an online poker player
http://hardboiledpoker.blogspot.com/2015/07/still-same.html
Existentialist musings from Short-Stacked Shamus,. An online poker player of (primarily) micro and low limits. Tuesday, July 28, 2015. It is no longer the case that everything is new to us. The routines are becoming more and more familiar, and while repetition can induce tedium, there is also a kind of pleasure that can come from it, too. I mean, I own exactly zero Bob Seger LPs. I feel like once I might. Have had a cassette of Against the Wind. If you ever listen to the classic rock station where you li...
Hard-Boiled Poker: The Mistake Is Still There -- Existentialist musings of an online poker player

Existentialist musings from Short-Stacked Shamus,. An online poker player of (primarily) micro and low limits. Monday, August 03, 2015. The Mistake Is Still There. Five days after that report was released, the NFL announced Brady’s suspension, with the NFL Players Association promptly appealing it. The team was also fined $1 million and lost a couple of draft picks, penalties which were not appealed. Anyhow, backing up to the beginning of all of this there was an article by Mortensen on ESPN on January 2...
Hard-Boiled Poker: The Virtual Rail -- Existentialist musings of an online poker player
http://hardboiledpoker.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-virtual-rail.html
Existentialist musings from Short-Stacked Shamus,. An online poker player of (primarily) micro and low limits. Monday, May 18, 2015. Late last week I was railing a friend as he played a Spring Championship of Online Poker event on PokerStars. He was on Twitch as well, and once I realized that I opened up his channel and heard him commenting about the heads-up match in which he was involved to a modest-sized audience of viewers, some of whom were chatting to him along the way. The other fellow’s channel a...

Kiss, Music from “The Elder”. Many claim Music from “The Elder”. Represents Kiss’s sole “concept” album, their other studio LPs, live discs, and greatest hits packages essentially compilations of anthem-like singles. That observation minimizes the fact that everything. In other words, all. Were “concept” albums, unified by commercially-mindful themes of sex and hedonism. But a slip in sales prompted a mid-career crisis, and Kiss momentarily sought a new “concept.”. A cinematic “Fanfare” intro...The ̶...
