A piercing whistle of pure joie de vivre. City of light meals. Monday, July 27th, 2015. A cool change blew through on our first night, thank the gods. The jetlagged girls couldn’t sleep, so I went out and lay on the sofa bed with them until the “Mama Bear is here” signal overwhelmed the “STRANGE ROOM” alarm in their reptile brains. Then I couldn’t sleep, so I climbed back in with Jeremy and his “Papa Bear” signal overwhelmed mine. Dinner at a City Crepes, where the grownups became perhaps too merry upon ...

A piercing whistle of pure joie de vivre. The philosopher kings, by jo walton. Thursday, July 9th, 2015. When I looked up and out the sea was, well, wine-dark as Homer puts it. The sea was a deep dark blue of precisely the same reflective luminosity as rich red wine. I knew what death meant now. It was conversations cut off. I kept trying to be less unjust, but did I ever really improve? She sighed. Everything is complicated and compromised. It is, I said. That’s the nature of reality. Laquo; flashes back.

A piercing whistle of pure joie de vivre. Adventure time 6: yosemite valley. Sunday, October 19th, 2014. So we went to see what all the fuss was about. The first night, we stayed at the Wawona. The absolute highlight of which was this handsome fellow vogueing in the shrubbery. Next morning, brunch at the Ahwahnee. Then El Capitan, or as I like to call him, Steve. We stormed around the Merced River for a bit, which was painfully scenic. Then I don’t even know, a meadow and some rocks and stuff. This Repub...

A piercing whistle of pure joie de vivre. Nerdcore marriage & 2 kids. Friday, July 23rd, 2010. You need some back story, an essential piece of family lore which I have mysteriously never blogged. Once when Claire was very small, we made one of our regular visits to (be still my heart) the Monterey Bay Aquarium. A docent was introducing her granddaughter to the Pacific Giant Octopus. When the docent ran her finger in a squiggly pattern against the glass, the octopus followed her with a tentacle. Feed Both...

A piercing whistle of pure joie de vivre. Friday, July 24th, 2015. At the lowest point of last year when I could think of nothing whatever to look forward to, I decided rather clinically that the kids needed to be taken to Yosemite, Paris and the Grand Canyon. We crossed Yosemite off the list last fall. And here I am in a fifth floor walkup in the 6e arrondissement, listening to the children chatting and singing in the next room, and marveling at the fact that I actually managed to pull this off. The Gen...

A piercing whistle of pure joie de vivre. Monday, July 18th, 2005. The pump for the domes was broken, so we ended up with a choice of Liberty, Newbird and the yurt; we took Newbird again, and Salome and Jack took the yurt. R: Already less drama than last time! Jeremy: Yes, by the time we got here, people had been arguing for three hours over who got which cabin. Jack (without irony): Damn, and I missed it. I love interpersonal conflict! Jack: Yeah, Heather used to be a huge activist. R: She grew gills.
