In a silent way: April 2009

In a silent way. Jazz * Media * Science * Literature * Engineering * Books * Computers * Movies * Math * Life * Biology * Machines * People. Sunday, April 26, 2009. My dead uncle sat beside me in the open courtyard of a square wooden house. We looked up at the first floor gallery, dark against the starry black sky of the night. Her face was hooded in a white cape. But I just knew that as she moved her eyes never left me. But I could hardly see the face that watched me. Then I saw that drop of blood.

In a silent way. Jazz * Media * Science * Literature * Engineering * Books * Computers * Movies * Math * Life * Biology * Machines * People. Saturday, September 27, 2008. Comics are books too. I remember saying that when I was about 10. I was not being theatrical. I was buying extra time with a superhero. Today, I am saying it again. Comic book writer Alan Moore’s Watchmen. It happened near the end of chapter 9. Now that’s a lot more than *pow* and *bif*, ain’t it? Comics are books too. A book and a movie.

You may not agree with what I have to say, but I will defend to the death my right to say it. Monday, August 27, 2001. He came off the street one rainy morning in August, three years ago. He was dripping wet, dirty and hungry. Instinctively, I was angry at the intrusion into my tiny little space, already crowded by three colleagues, four computers and a bunch of pesky mice with a taste for mouse cords. That day, I had only half my lunch. It’s strange, now that I think back about it. Except those two ...

You may not agree with what I have to say, but I will defend to the death my right to say it. Saturday, October 20, 2001. It was seven years ago. I was assigned to write an article for Mid-Day’s anniversary special on Bombay’s dancing bars. I had a sense of déjà vu Saturday as I watched a grainy print of Chandni Bar. There are two outstanding sequences in the film, though. Chandni Bar is worth watching, if only for those scenes. Is a dancer in Chandni Bar. Potya, a local gangster, takes a shine on he...

You may not agree with what I have to say, but I will defend to the death my right to say it. Tuesday, February 12, 2002. Commit a crime to cast your vote, EC orders. In an astonishing move, the Election Commission ruled late today that those without a criminal record would not be allowed to vote. It has also lowered the age bar to accommodate juvenile delinquents. The EC has ordered a revamping of the electoral rolls in consultation with the law-enforcement agencies. Why do you say that? A direct fallou...
